Plot Synopsis

Executive produced by Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle, THE NEW NEGROES WITH BARON VAUGHN AND OPEN MIKE EAGLE is a half-hour variety series that features stand-up comedy sets and original songs and music videos from Open Mike Eagle with a guest artist. The series also features some guest-actor appearances. According to Vaughn and Eagle, the pair took inspiration for the series and title from the term "New Negro" as popularized during the Harlem Renaissance, referring to Black Americans speaking up, telling their own stories, and affirming their various identities to dismantle outdated assumptions and beliefs. THE NEW NEGROES started as a live show at Upright Citizens Brigade four years earlier, but tecently, Vaughn and Eagle brought the live version of The New Negroes to SXSW 2019 for a show featuring Sam Jay, Josh Johnson, Dulce Sloan, Phonte, with a special appearance by Hannibal Buress.

THE NEW NEGROES premiered on Friday, April 19, 2019 at 11pm ET/PT on Comedy Central, with a simulcast on BET. The series opener, "Identity," features comics Chris Redd, Shalewa Sharpe, Langston Kerman and Hannibal Buress, as well as music from Danny Brown.

Subsequent episodes feature stand-up talent, including Donnell Rawlings, Lil Rel Howery, Sasheer Zamata, Dulce Sloan, George Wallace, Sam Jay and many more, in addition to musical talent, such as Method Man, MF Doom, Phonte, Lizzo, Father, and Sammus.
