Plot Synopsis

THE NIGHT SHIFT is a one-hour medical drama series that follows a group of doctors, residents, nurses and administrators, who work the graveyard shift at San Antonio Memorial Hospital. Adrenaline junkie T.C. Callahan, who just returned from a grueling tour of duty for the Army in the Middle East, is about to learn that his toughest battles will be fought right at home, especially when he tries practicing his unorthodox brand of medicine and butts head with his superiors. His team of late-night doctors and residents includes: Topher, an ER doctor, who wears flip flops and shorts and was previously a surgeon on the battlefield; Drew, who is also an MMA fighter; Krista, a resident, who is beautiful and stylish; Paul, a resident, who is young, eager and squeamish; and Dr. Atthea Martin, a trauma doctor, who recently returned to her old job after her husband was killed by a drunk driver. Unfortunately, the night shift is now under new management and boss Michael Ragosa, a wannabe doctor who had to drop out of med school because of vision problems, is more interested in cutting costs than helping people. But T.C. has never met a rule he couldn't break, which means nobody can keep him in line -- not even his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Jordan Alexander, who was recently promoted to Chief of the Night Shift and is trying to placate Ragosa by keeping T.C. in check. In the Season 1 finale, Topher is gravely wounded in a shootout. TC and Scott perform Topher's emergency surgery as TC struggles to keep his increasingly troubling Afghanistan flashbacks under control. After experiencing the hostage situation, Jordan comes to understand the immense pressure that TC has been under since leaving Afghanistan. She struggles to maintain her composure when she must treat Milo, who was responsible for the shooting. Meanwhile, an explosion at a fertilizer factory sends badly burned victims to the ER and threatens to overwhelm the shorthanded staff. Krista must step up to manage a patient who is crashing. THE NIGHT SHIFT returned for its second season on Monday, February 23, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC, with Eoin Macken, Ken Leung, Jill Flint, Robert Bailey Jr., Jeananne Goossen, JR Lemon, Brendan Fehr and Freddy Rodriguez coming back for the new season. In the season opener, "Recovery," after a harrowing hostage incident left the night shift team badly shaken, everyone is finally back to business...everyone except TC Callahan, who has been temporarily suspended from the hospital after a PTSD breakdown on the job. After recovering from his near-fatal gunshot wound, Topher Zia has temporarily taken over as chief of the night shift while Jordan Alexander fields scrutiny over her medical mishandling of the man who shot him. TC can't stay away from the action however and joins Jordan out in the field, and with the help of head surgeon Scott Clemmens, they push the limits of medical technology to save a father trapped beneath an elevator. Dr. Joey Chavez brings a new zen vibe to the ER when he steps in as chief surgeon on a freak motorcycle accident case, working to the beat of his own drum. Meanwhile, Ragosa returns to the ER with a surprising new lease on life after surviving cancer. Season 3 of THE NIGHT SHIFT premiered on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "The Times They Are A-Changin'," the night shift crew is back for more action and the gang finds themselves immersed in a life-and-death rescue of a woman gravely injured in a car accident. While TC Callahan, Scott Clemmens and Topher Zia deal with the situation at the hospital, Drew Alister is serving time overseas in Afghanistan and he, along with colleague Syd Jennings, have to figure out a way around the cultural divide to treat a young Afghani woman. Jordan Alexander has recruited Shannon Rivera to the night shift team and the recent med school graduate is eager to prove herself, but her spunky, outspoken nature may not sit well with everyone, particularly Paul Cummings. The story continues next week in the second part of the two-part episode. The fourth season of THE NIGHT SHIFT premiered on Thursday, June 22, 2017 from 9-10pm ET/PT on NBC. Returning cast includes Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Brendan Fehr, Robert Bailey Jr., JR Lemon, Tanaya Beatty and Scott Wolf. In the season opener, "Recoil," Jordan and Drew perform a daring rescue by jumping from a chopper. Landing at the nearest VA hospital, Jordan sparks a plan to appease Julian and reunite her night shift team. Back at the hospital, Paul deals with the repercussions of standing up to his father while Scott dives headlong into his professional life. Kenny butts heads with Cain, a traveling nurse with a mysterious past. Shannon indoctrinates Cain as they work in San Antonio Memorial's understaffed and overworked ER. Meanwhile, TC is held captive in Syria. In order to find Syd, TC must treat his captor instead of returning to the safety of an air base with a civilian volunteer, Amira.
On Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT, NBC premiered the Season 4 finale of THE NIGHT SHIFT. In the season ender, "Resurgence," a shooting at a nearby college sends TC, Jordan, Drew, and Amira into the field, where they assist Rick with a deadly situation. Scott implements a new training program and locks horns with Julian. Drew struggles with frustrations about going to Army Ranger School while Shannon and TC both contemplate their future at San Antonio Memorial.
