Plot Synopsis
From the Arctic Circle to the Panama Canal, this seven-part series reveals life forms that thrive in North America's impossible mountains, unexplored forests, rugged coasts and endless deserts. Film crews crisscrossed 10 countries, 29 U.S. states, and eight Canadian provinces for over three years, as 51 camera-crew members spent at least 2,800 days in the field to capture more than 850 hours of HD footage of 110 animal species. For the first time ever, NORTH AMERICA presents these animal behaviors: brown bears diving in the lakes on Kodiak Island, as a mini submarine filmed bears diving at least 20 feet down to catch salmon; the acoustic vibration of a male jumping spider, because the crew used laser technology to capture new data; coyotes eating hawk moth caterpillars and beetles in Death Valley, showing how these animals adapt during times when resources are scarce; a successful wolf hunt in Labrador, using aerial shots to capture the entire sequence; a hammerhead shark pursuing and eating a spinner shark on the coast of Palm Beach, Florida; and bats leaving a cave to hunt in Texas, using HD quality helicopter aerials for the first time. Plus, this series used: 91 camera days filming prairie dogs, bison and rattlesnakes in the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota; a dozen cameras filming continuously over six months to capture footage of the elusive desert jaguar; HDR cameras to capture time-lapse shots of weather and extreme storms; and much more.
