Plot Synopsis
Two world-class cameramen, Doug Allan and Didier Noirot, and a team of scientists document the lives of whales and dolphins, as they survive and thrive in extreme conditions from Antarctica to the Amazon. Whether they are racing thousands of miles to woo a mate, communicating with other species or harmonizing with each other, these mammals exhibit breakthrough behaviors for which scientists use the latest technologies to investigate. Each 60-minute episode highlights a different aspect of cetacea: "Giant Lives," focusing on why size matters in the world or whales; "Deep Thinkers," documenting how whales and dolphins work co-operatively, show empathy and are self-aware; and "Voices of the Sea," revealing how whales use sound in place of sight. PBS aired the U.S. premiere of this series on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 8pm ET as part of its NATURE series, showing all three episodes on the same night.
