Plot Synopsis
Executive produced by Peter Tolan and Paul Giamatti, OUTSIDERS is a one-hour drama series about the struggle for power and control in the rugged and mysterious hills of Appalachia. This series explores the epic battle between the Farrell Clan, a tight-knit family of renegades who have lived atop Shay Mountain for over 200 years, and anyone who would dare challenge them. Living off the grid and above the law on their mountaintop homestead, the Farrells will protect their world and defend their way of life from the town below -- using any means necessary. Asa Farrell is a cousin of Foster Farrell the 6th, who is the son of clan leader Lady Ray. Asa's fascination with the world below led him to leave the clan as a teenager. For the next decade, Asa lived amongst the rest of us, ultimately ending up on the West Coast. He quickly learned that the only thing that really mattered in the outside world was money. After hitting rock bottom, Asa decided to go back to Shay Mountain and his family. Despite his newfound commitment to mountain life, Asa's experience away from the Farrells will make it difficult for him to fully be a part of the clan again. Because of Asa's return, Lady Ray has delayed handing over power to Big Foster (aka Foster Farrell the 6th), as she had promised him. Big Foster is the most powerful male on the hill, and next in line to be Bren'in, the Farrells' king. Despite being denied by his mother, has has decided to take power for himself, an impulse that will cause major strife within the clan. Though he strongly believes in many of the tenets of Farrell culture, particularly the prohibition of money, he is all the same susceptible to the allure of alcohol, women, and guns. Big Foster's eldest son, Lil' Foster (aka Foster Farrell the 7th), is pathologically loyal to his father. Ever seeking his father's approval, Lil' Foster works tirelessly to assist Big Foster in all of his schemes, often to his own personal detriment. But Lil Foster is madly in love with G'Winveer and burdened by the fact that she won't agree to be his wife -- and he believes Asa's return has something to do with her reluctance. G'Winveer, Asa's third cousin, has lived a hard life, but is a true rustic beauty. She's one of the clan's healers and grows herbs and concocts natural remedies. As teenagers, G'Win and Asa shared a special love that both felt would last forever, but Asa chose to leave the mountain rather than stay and start a family with her. Now, G'Win is distrustful of Asa upon his return, but still struggles with her long-buried feelings for him -- even after being in a long-term relationship with Lil' Foster. The 13-episode second season of OUTSIDERS premiered Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT on WGN America. The struggle for power and control continues in the rugged hills of Appalachia, the conflict between the clan and the town escalates with the Farrells becoming more isolated than ever before. The uneasy truce that had generally existed between the townspeople and the Farrell clan came to an end as Big Coal interests headed up the mountain and the standoff at the end of season one continues to have repercussions, putting everyone to the test as they're forced to face new challenges and enemies.
