Plot Synopsis
Each Saturday and Sunday, senior correspondent Hari Sreenivasan anchored the 30-minute PBS NEWSHOUR WEEKEND, which uses renowned experts to provide in-depth analysis and field reporting on topics including education, healthcare, the economy, energy, science and technology, religion, finance, and the arts. Early episodes of this series covered topics like: Israel's discovery of offshore natural gas reserves, as reported by correspondent Martin Fletcher; composer Stephen Sondheim and the New Hampshire Institute of Art, as documented by correspondent Jeffrey Brown; an innovative tidal turbine in Downeast Maine, which could provide a model for scalable clean energy across the country; correspondent William Brangham reports from Vancouver on recent changes to drunk-driving laws that have led to a dramatic decrease (roughly 50 percent) in alcohol-related fatalities; how Oregon is considering a new tax based on the number of miles driven instead of the volume of gasoline used; cities like New York and Vancouver are experimenting with micro apartments, which are very, very small living spaces; and many more field-reported pieces.
In April 2022, the series relaunched as PBS NEWS WEEKEND, anchored by chief Washington correspondent Geoff Bennett.
