Plot Synopsis

Directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, THE PREPPY MURDER: DEATH IN CENTRAL PARK is a five-part documentary series that re-examines one of the most infamous crimes in recent American history: the 1986 killing of Jennifer Levin at the hands of Robert Chambers. This series exposes evidence that was inadmissible in the trial and also examines the circumstances that made the story unfold the way it did: America's untamed ambition in the mid-1980s, the rarified lifestyle of New York's privileged prep school kids, sexism, elitism, an all-out tabloid media war that blamed the victim and an imperfect justice system.

"In the mid to late 1980s, two epic crimes rocked New York and the broader country -- the Central Park Five case and the murder of Jennifer Levin. These events have a few things in common: they both took place in Central Park and the prosecutor who tried both cases was Linda Fairstein. What's more, together they shine a startling light on how race, gender and socioeconomics profoundly influenced the course of justice," said Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks' Entertainment Group. "PREPPY MURDER, made with the participation of Fairstein, the Levin family and friends of Jennifer Levin and Robert Chambers, examines the circumstances that made Jennifer's case play out the way it did -- as a victim-blaming led narrative that fueled a tabloid media war. This story of sexism, elitism and an imperfect justice system both illuminates the past and has relevance to a vital conversation today."

The series airs over three nights on AMC and SundanceTV, from November 13 through November 15, 2019:

"Part 1: Woman Down In Central Park" (Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at 9pm): The NYPD identifies a dead girl in Central Park as Jennifer Levin; the search for her killer leads to her prep school friend Robert Chambers; Robert confesses he killed Jennifer Levin accidentally during rough sex.

"Part 2: Rough Sex" (Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at 10pm): Robert confesses he killed Jennifer Levin accidentally during rough sex; his mother hires a high-profile attorney who says Jennifer was the aggressor.

"Part 3: Who Is Robert Chambers?" (Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 9pm): Robert's preppy persona begins to crumble; when the Church steps in to support Robert, the judge releases him on bail.

"Part 4: Blame the Victim" (Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 10pm): The media jumps on the defense's strategy to make Jennifer seem fast and loose; the prosecution works to establish motive.

"Part 5: The Trial of the Decade" (Friday, November 15, 2019 at 9pm): Both sides present their cases; jurors are mesmerized by Robert's charisma; afraid Robert has charmed them, the prosecution offers a plea deal.
