Plot Synopsis

Each year since 1997, the Entertainment Industries Council, Inc. (EIC) has conferred the PRISM Awards, honoring the accurate depiction of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and addiction, as well as mental health issues, in movies, television, music, DVD and comic book entertainment. The PRISM Awards encourage creators to make the most of their rights to free creative expression, while at the same time showing the reality of these health issues. PRISM Award submissions are judged by members of the creative community and scientific experts for entertainment value, accessibility of the message, and scientific accuracy. From 2000 - 2002, the PRISM awards aired in national syndication, usually during August, even though the ceremonies were held earlier in the year in May. The 2000 PRISM AWARDS, the first event televised across the nation, launched in national syndication by Tribune Entertainment the week of August 5. Since 2003, FX has broadcast the PRISM awards, sometimes in conjunction with other networks. And since 2008, the event has been broadcast during September, which is National Recovery Month, a month dedicated to supporting prevention, treatment, and recovery from substance use and co-occurring disorders. The 17th Annual PRISM Awards, held at The Beverly Hills Hotel on Thursday, April 25, 2013, and nearly five months later, FX presented the television debut of the 17th Annual PRISM Awards on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 3pm ET/PT. In the 2013 ceremony, Katey Sagal won the award for Female Performance in a Drama Multi-Episode Storyline on SONS OF ANARCHY, which was presented by former MARRIED WITH CHILDREN... co-star Ed O'Neil, and Michael Cudlitz was honored for Performance in a Drama Series Episode on SOUTHLAND, in a presentation by co-star Ben McKenzie. The 18th Annual PRISM Awards ceremony, held at Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles on April 24, 2014, was hosted by Dr. Drew Pinsky with co-hosts Candace Cameron Bure and Tim Kang. More than four months later, FX premiered a one-hour television special for the event on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Noon ET/PT.

LOUIE and MOM both took home the award for comedy series. ELEMENTARY and CHICAGO FIRE won the prize for drama multi-episode storylines for substance abuse and mental health, respectively. Drama episode awards went to BLUE BLOODS for mental health and MAJOR CRIMES for substance abuse. Plus, Katie Cassidy was the performance winner for drama series for ARROW, while Macy Gray won for her role in the Lifetime TV movie THE GRIM SLEEPER, which also earned the Prism Award for TV Movie or Miniseries.
