Plot Synopsis

In addition to creating, writing, directing, composing music for, and executive producing the series, artist Terence Nance appears in all six episodes of RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS, which is a stream-of-conscious response to the contemporary American mediascape. Each half-hour episode features a handful of interconnected vignettes, showcasing an ensemble cast of emerging and established talent. The show is a mix of verite documentary, musical performances, surrealist melodrama and humorous animation. Nance and his collaborators weave together such themes as ancestral trauma, history, death, the singularity, and romance. Guest stars include Dominique Fishback, Whoopi Goldberg, Gillian Jacobs, Ntare Guma Mwine, Adepero Oduye, Natalie Paul, Paul Sparks, and more. In the series opener, "What Are Your Thoughts on Raising Free Black Children?," Terence introduces RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS before being stopped by the NYPD. Segments include: "Everybody Dies!," a cable-access show hosted by "Ripa the Reaper"; an infomercial for a topical-ointment cure for "white thoughts"; and a talk show on sex in the black community Other segments in the season include: a first-person shooter game for women that takes out street harassers with scowls; a tutorial for men on how to not be a creep; a Dominican-American musical interpretation of "a classic children's fairytale"; a consideration of whether Michelle Obama is God; and more.
On Friday, September 7, 2018 at Midnight ET/PT, HBO premiered the 75-minute Season 1 finale of RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS. In the season ender, "They Won't Go When I Go," a woman stays woke too long. In the not-too-distant future, a waitress contemplates uploading her consciousness to the cloud amidst warnings of an impending hurricane. After Najja has her demons exorcised, her Jealousy tries to talk its way back into her life. Artist Stephanie Dinkins describes her encounters with a simulated black woman named BINA48.

Two weeks earlier -- on Monday, August 20, 2018 -- HBO renewed RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS for a second season.
