Plot Synopsis

THE RESIDENT is a one-hour medical drama series that focuses on a young doctor's final years of training, ripping back the curtain and revealing the truth of what really happens -- both good and bad -- at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA. The series opens with Dr. Devon Pravesh on his first day as an intern at Chastain, where third-year resident Dr. Conrad Hawkins takes him under his wing to teach his unconventional ways for treating patients. Meanwhile, Conrad goes head to head with Dr. Randolph Bell, the Chief of Surgery, who uses power and intimidation to cover up his mistakes. Meanwhile, the hospital's savviest nurse, Nic, uses her know-how to manage the team of egomaniacal doctors while dealing with the admins. They're joined by: Dr. Lane Hunter, the top oncologist in the state of Georgia; Dr. Mina Okafor, a Nigerian rising surgical star recently trained on a new device that could redefine surgery; Claire Thorpe, the tough and pragmatic CEO of Chastain; and Renata Morali, the savvy and elegant head of marketing. FOX debuted the series premiere on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 10pm ET/7pm PT, immediately following the postgame show for the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP between the Minnesota Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles. (The actual start time may be later, depending on the duration of the football game.) THE RESIDENT moves to its regular timeslot -- Mondays at 9pm -- with a new episode premiering the following day on January 22.

The sophomore season of THE RESIDENT premiered on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 8pm ET/PT on FOX. The second season finds star resident Dr. Conrad Hawkins continuing to make difficult calls in the best interests of his patients. But, having rekindled a romantic relationship with nurse Nicolette 'Nic' Nevin, the two now must face unresolved issues from their past. Conrad's father, Marshall Winthrop, has taken over as head of Chastain, and comes into direct conflict with the hospital's newly minted CEO, Dr. Randolph Bell. Meanwhile, Dr. Mina Okafor continues to work with her larger-than-life mentor, Dr. AJ Austin. However, the skills of new ortho surgeon Dr. Kitt Voss could lead Mina on a different path. First-year resident Dr. Devon Pravesh becomes intrigued by new medical device rep Julian Booth, whose presence at the hospital will upend business as usual for everyone there. On Monday, January 14, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT, FOX debuted "After the Fall," the mid-season premiere of THE RESIDENT. Dr. Lane Hunter's (guest star Melina Kanakaredes) victims and their families become outraged when she is released from prison. Bell, although responsible for posting Lane's bail and getting her released, continues to be tortured by her manipulation. Meanwhile, Conrad uses work to cope with the news about his father, and he teams up with Mina, Kit and the Raptor to treat a patient who is suffering as a result of Lane's dangerous treatments. Then, Devon grows worried when he doesn't hear from Julian, and Nic sets her sights on a primary physician, Dr. Alex Shaw (guest star Miles Gaston Villanueva), for their new clinic. Additional guest stars: Michael Weston as Gordon Page, Radek Lord as Grayson Betournay, Elia Monte-Brown as Natalie Ramirez, and Kevin Christy as Roger Stanley.

FOX premiered the third season of THE RESIDENT on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT. In the season opener, "From the Ashes," the doctors of Chastain are surrounded by new rules and doctors, as Red Rock Mountain Medical takes over the hospital. Conrad finds himself in a dangerous situation when the construction for a new neurosurgery center causes a gas explosion at Chastain. Meanwhile, new hotshot neurosurgeon Barrett Cain (Morris Chestnut), is put to the test with a complicated surgery and Mina acts as a support for Nic, who is struggling with a devastating loss. On Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 8pm ET/PT, FOX debuted "Free Fall," the winter premiere of THE RESIDENT. After being terminated from Chastain, Conrad has difficulty figuring out his next step and distracts himself by accompanying a patient on a zero-gravity adventure. In his first move as the new Chief of Surgery, Cain puts the doctors on a commission-based pay system, which causes Devon's new intern to agree to a procedure before weighing the risks. Meanwhile, Mina struggles with taking care of Adaku's baby and Bell's supplement company get its big break.

Meanwhile, Chastain is transitioning from private to public hospital, causing the hero doctors to fight to fix the broken machine from the inside. Dr. Randolph Bell finds himself mining his own past to find his estranged former stepson, elite plastic surgeon Dr. Jake Wong (guest star Conrad Ricamora). Bell attempts to bring Dr. Wong to Chastain to increase the number of world-class surgeries at the hospital and to repair their complicated past.
