Plot Synopsis

SAVING THE KING is a three-part documentary that chronicles the story of spies and silent pacts, as told in first person by witnesses and experts, while exposing how the machinery of the state is keen to protect the former King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, and conceal his scandals. Crowned king in 1975, Juan Carlos I leads Spain into democracy following the reign of Francisco Franco, but, in the ensuing years, both the government and his powerful friends strive to hide his scandals. In the 1990s, Juan Carlos projects an international image of success, but as our interviewees reveal, some aspects of his personal life force the State and his friends to work to protect his reputation. As Juan Carlos' scandals come to light, the pressure becomes unbearable, and his reputation is irreparably shaken. His relationship with Corinna Larsen marks a turning point in his reign. Saving the king becomes an impossible task. All three episodes of SAVING THE KING dropped on Friday, September 9, 2022 on HBO Max.
