Plot Synopsis

Hosted by naturalist and big-cat specialist Boone Smith, this four-part, two-night event reveals how predators strategize, improvise and specialize in order to survive. SECRET LIFE OF PREDATORS travels around the globe to the depths of the oceans, the high forests, the vast open land, and to the edge of Earth to capture every strike, chase and kill. Regardless of where they stalk, soar or swim, carnivores must fight for every morsel, every meal, every day, using tricks that help them beat the odds. Combining cutting-edge cinematography with a soundtrack of indie-rock music, including Snow Patrol and The Lumineers, SECRET LIFE OF PREDATORS delivers stories about 45 different animal species from 12 different habitats, capturing footage and never-before-seen animal behaviors, including: polar bears and Arctic foxes in the brutal cold, just 400 miles from the North Pole; the fastest fish in the ocean, more than 200 miles out to sea from Mexico; the giant Pacific octopus, more than 150 feet underwater in Canada; glass frog embryos, deep in the rainforest; a lioness, which helps an elder feed on the African Savanna; and killer whales, using a previously unknown hunting technique near Alaska's Aleutian Islands. The four episodes are: "Naked," showing how predators must hide in plain sight to survive the Savanna; "Stealth," chronicling how forest predators rely on stealth-like skills to survive; "Exposed," documenting how predators living near land-water barriers must master skills to hunt in both habitats; and "Wet," showcasing how water predators are constantly tested in the ocean's ruthless battlefields. Simulcast on Nat Geo and Nat Geo Wild, SECRET LIFE OF PREDATORS aired on consecutive Fridays, September 20 and September 27, 2013, from 8-10pm ET/PT.
