Plot Synopsis

SECRET LIVES OF AMERICANS takes an unflinching look at individuals as they expose powerful secrets to the most influential people in their lives. This series is primarily shot by the subjects themselves, giving viewers an opportunity to experience immersive and intimate documentation, hearing firsthand about the turmoil caused by the skeletons in their closets. Each story is complemented by archival, documentary and news footage that illustrates the bigger picture in present-day America behind the social issue of focus. These personal stories provide a window into serious and very real issues plaguing the country at a micro and macro level. Season 1 features these people: a single mother who struggles to feed her children each day, lifting the curtain on food insecurity in America; a young professional who shows up to work in a suit every day, but who is homeless and crippled by student loan debt.
Season 2 of SECRET LIVES OF AMERICANS premiered on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on Pivot. The 20-episode second season looks at several high-stakes issues in the U.S. that push many to secrecy and isolation, including bankruptcy, veterans' issues and addiction. In the season opener, Amy, a young woman from Washington, DC, has been living a double life for the past 15 years. It's now time for her to overcome her fear and share her true identity with friends. Amy's secret is that her real name is Elhan and that she is a Muslim. In season's second episode, Cleo, a truck driver and busy mom, has been hiding a secret from her family for decades. No longer ashamed, she is ready to reveal the truth to her family so that they can move forward together. Cleo's secret is that she never learned to read.
