Plot Synopsis

Created and produced by Simon Fuller and narrated by Lupita Nyong'o, SERENGETI is a six-part documentary series that explores the vast, nearly untouched plains of Tanzania, highlighting the majestic animals and their day-to-day lives living together, featuring lions, zebras, baboons and cheetahs over the course of a year, and showcasing the dramatic moments that make each day of survival on the Serengeti a feat. Soon the season of plenty will begin to fade and food will be harder to come by, putting the animals of the Serengeti to the ultimate test. With new arrivals and unexpected problems, old foes resurfacing and dangerous encounters at nearly every turn, the Serengeti will demand courage from all who call it home. In SERENGETI, the world's most captivating animals try to survive in the beautiful, demanding lands of Northern Africa, stopping at nothing to protect their offspring and prove their worthiness to their tribe. From Kali the lioness and Shani the Zebra, to Zalika the Hyena and many more, each species has their own unique story, whether dealing with their enemies or desperately searching for prey. Kali makes a big mistake and is now left completely alone to fend for herself and her cubs- an almost impossible task in the African plains. The series also features Tembo, a young male elephant struggling to take the next step on his journey into adulthood, as well as Nalla, the family matriarch juggling to lead the herd and be a mother. Across the Serengeti, Bakari the Baboon looks to honor the memory of his lost love by fiercely protecting her orphaned child. SERENGETI premiered on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery, with a simulcast on Animal Planet.

Tonight (Sunday, August 18, 2019) at 8pm ET/PT, Discovery Channel premieres "Invasion," a new episode of SERENGETI. The incredible anticipation of the annual Great Migration is being felt by all of the Serengeti's families, as they wait with great desperation for it to arrive. The land continues to get hotter and hunger starts to bite as food becomes ever more scarce for the predators. But life continues, with Kali the lioness and her sister entrusting their cubs to their new male babysitter Sefu -- with near-disastrous results. Bakari the baboon is shocked when a trip across the river to collect crocodile eggs looks like it will end in tragedy for his new female Cheka and the adopted baby. His rivalry with the troop leader then puts him and the baby in more danger. A family of wild dogs moves in, led by male Jasari. With a huge litter of pups, Jasari is ready to take advantage of the coming feast, but until the migrating herds arrive it is a struggle to survive. Shani, a female zebra is leading her family on the great migration. She is forced to stop temporarily to give birth to her foal, but as soon as he can run they are off again, heading towards the great river. When the herds finally arrive at the river, they find it teeming with crocodiles, and zebra mother Shani has to decide how and when she can take her newborn foal across the treacherous water. Lying in wait and watching them carefully is a large mother crocodile, who is determined to eat them if they try. With the Great Migration now in full flow, there are winners and losers on both sides. The awe-inspiring spectacle it brings is part of the deep seasonal rhythms that govern all life in the Serengeti.
