Plot Synopsis

Created and produced by Simon Fuller and narrated by Lupita Nyong'o, SERENGETI is a six-part documentary series that explores the vast, nearly untouched plains of Tanzania, highlighting the majestic animals and their day-to-day lives living together, featuring lions, zebras, baboons and cheetahs over the course of a year, and showcasing the dramatic moments that make each day of survival on the Serengeti a feat. Soon the season of plenty will begin to fade and food will be harder to come by, putting the animals of the Serengeti to the ultimate test. With new arrivals and unexpected problems, old foes resurfacing and dangerous encounters at nearly every turn, the Serengeti will demand courage from all who call it home. In SERENGETI, the world's most captivating animals try to survive in the beautiful, demanding lands of Northern Africa, stopping at nothing to protect their offspring and prove their worthiness to their tribe. From Kali the lioness and Shani the Zebra, to Zalika the Hyena and many more, each species has their own unique story, whether dealing with their enemies or desperately searching for prey. Kali makes a big mistake and is now left completely alone to fend for herself and her cubs- an almost impossible task in the African plains. The series also features Tembo, a young male elephant struggling to take the next step on his journey into adulthood, as well as Nalla, the family matriarch juggling to lead the herd and be a mother. Across the Serengeti, Bakari the Baboon looks to honor the memory of his lost love by fiercely protecting her orphaned child. SERENGETI premiered on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery, with a simulcast on Animal Planet.
On Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT, Discovery Channel premiered "Rebirth," the finale of SERENGETI. It's time to close another chapter in the lives of the animals of the Serengeti, the end of an extraordinary year for them all. All around is a blackened smoking wasteland, the aftermath of the huge fire: which of the families made it out alive, and who is still missing?

As torrential rain quenches the scorched earth, the land is reborn into a green paradise. The changes in the landscape are reflected in the cycle of death and rebirth, as the Serengeti's elders prepare their young for adulthood and a life on their own.

Lioness Kali is alive, but one of her three cubs is missing. Kike the cheetah returns and must train her grown up cubs to survive on their own. The short lush grasslands make the perfect training grounds for her lessons of survival. She teaches them to stalk, chase and trip their prey. A giraffe, grieving over the unexplained death of her calf, interrupts the cubs' training regime. Leader of the wild dogs Jasari is also showing his pups how to survive on their own, but when he teaches them to fight off hyenas they too are interrupted by the grieving giraffe.

In the flooded river, elephant matriarch Nalla's baby struggles in the torrents. Bakari returns when a huge fight with a rival baboon troop threatens his family and he shows his bravery once more.

Kali has yet more surprises in store which bring hope for her and her pride's future. Kike has to leave her cubs and hope that they are ready for independence. With the death of an old male elephant, all the families come together and old rivalries end in a remarkable truce.

With a new regime in place among the baboons, the harmony of nature is restored, and for now, the future is bright for the families of the Serengeti.
