Plot Synopsis

Based on the podcast of the same name and hosted by podcast host/founder Hrishikesh Hirway, each half-hour episode of SONG EXPLODER features some of the world's greatest musicians as they reveal how they brought one of their songs to life. The series weaves together in-depth interviews, archival footage, and raw recordings as each artist breaks down their song -- layer by layer -- sharing intimate insight into the personal inspiration behind the music and lyrics. Featured artists include artist, songwriter, and producer Alicia Keys, who breaks down "3 Hour Drive" from her 2020 album, ALICIA; composer, lyricist, and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, who delves into the creation of "Wait for It" from the musical "Hamilton"; R.E.M. who open up about the influences behind the life-changing track "Losing My Religion"; and singer, songwriter, and producer Ty Dolla $ign who discusses the inspiration behind "LA," the deeply personal opening track from his gold-certified major label debut album, FREE TC. On Friday, October 2, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Netflix released the entire four-episode first season of SONG EXPLODER.

SONG EXPLODER returned for its second season, as Netflix released all four episodes on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT. In Season 2, The Killers, Natalia Lafourcade, Dua Lipa and Nine Inch Nails pull back the curtain on their personal songwriting experiences as the series continues. When a bad breakup spills into the studio, Dua Lipa finds release in high-drama strings, throwback analog synths and memories of her parents' faves. Eager to beat the sophomore album slump, the Killers dusted off three chords to capture their desert home of Las Vegas -- and mine for pop anthem gold. Broken-down sounds, damaged vocals and naked emotion make a chilling coda to a blockbuster LP as Trent Reznor talks about transforming pain into art. After stepping back from stardom, Natalia Lafourcade rediscovers her roots, which are planted deep in Veracruz and the rhythm of huapango folk music.
