Plot Synopsis
Created by Abi Morgan, THE SPLIT is a one-hour drama series that explores modern marriage and the legacy of divorce, as seen through the lens of the Defoes -- a family of female lawyers at the heart of London's emotionally-charged divorce circuit. Leading divorce lawyer Hannah Stern has walked out on the family firm Defoe's to join rival company Noble & Hale. She now faces her sister Nina and mother Ruth, also successful family lawyers, on the opposing side of high-profile divorce cases. Multi-millionaire Sportswear mogul Davey McKenzie and his childhood sweetheart Goldie embark on a painful divorce and a wrangle for control of the family business. And in a bitter custody battle Rex Pope, a well-known stand-up comedian, takes on his angry estranged wife and former comedy agent. When their father Oscar returns after a 30-year absence, Hannah, Nina and youngest sister Rose are thrown into turmoil. Meanwhile at Noble & Hale Hannah has uncharacteristically placed herself back in the orbit of old flame, fellow lawyer Christie Carmichael. As the past resurfaces, Hannah, for so long adept at navigating other people's lives and relationships, is confronted with questions and painful revelations about her own. THE SPLIT had its U.S. premiere on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 10pm ET/PT on SundanceTV.
Season 2 of THE SPLIT premiered on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Midnight ET/9pm PT on SundanceTV. This season finds the Defoes back, at newly merged law firm Noble Hale Defoe, and as former rivals now find themselves on the same side of the table, Hannah's latest case is set to put NHD firmly on the map. Meanwhile, Rose and James return from their honeymoon with ambitions to start their own family and Nina teeters on the edge, as the consequences of her erratic behavior finally catch up with her. Ruth, now forced out from her role as head of the family firm, must search for a new purpose in her life.
The third and final season of THE SPLIT debuted on Thursday, June 23, 2022 on SundanceNow, as the streaming service released the first two episodes. Following the messy lives of the three Defoe sisters, Hannah, Nina, and Rose and their formidable mother Ruth, series creator and writer Abi Morgan will make her directorial debut and conclude the trilogy with the most dramatic and heartbreaking season to date, as we watch a divorce lawyer confronted by her very own divorce. Adding fuel to the fire, the catalyst to the breakdown of Hannah and Nathan's marriage, Christie, will return, which sees Hannah and Nathan's formerly rock-solid marriage unravel as they try to come to an amicable separation agreement. As Hannah and Nathan begin to divide up their 20 years together, Hannah faces what she is about to lose and a shocking revelation dramatically changes the stakes. As the battlelines are redrawn, we wonder if their dream of achieving the 'good divorce' is even possible. Will they find a path through the wreckage, or is The Split simply too deep to repair? Season 3 of THE SPLIT made its linear television debut in the U.S. on Monday, June 27, 2022 at 11pm ET/PT on BBC America.
