Plot Synopsis

Hailey Gates explores global fashion and issues the industry often ignores, revealing what the world wears -- and why. She looks deeper at fashion and beauty standards outside of those typically seen at fashion week in New York, London, and Paris, in order to better understand the cultural idiosyncrasies and sociopolitical shifts happening all over the world. By investigating and celebrating the garments people wear and the people who make them, as well as the great and terrible things we do to our bodies all in the pursuit of 'beauty,' STATES OF UNDRESS highlights the complicated forces that make fashion the perfect lens through which to view a culture. Each one-hour episode of this series -- which is part travelogue, part accidental trend report -- focuses on a different region of the world, including: Pakistan, where Karachi Fashion Week provides a kind of sanctuary, but outside its bubble Hailey finds the forces working to eradicate the progressive culture it represents; and other locations like Venezuela, the Congo, Palestine, Russia, and China. Season 2 of STATES OF UNDRESS premiered on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on Viceland, as Hailey continues her exploration of global fashion far beyond the runway, showing viewers what the world wears, and more importantly... why. Gates crisscrosses the globe visiting far-flung locales including: France during its heated, and globally impactful Presidential election where anti-immigrant sentiment has manifest itself with a national ban on traditional religious garb like the Muslim burka. In addition, Gates travels to Thailand where gender fluidity and fashion are intertwined; Liberia, where fashion is helping the country recover from its Ebola crisis... and Independence, Ohio for its second annual Concealed Carry Fashion Show. In the season opener, "Packing Heat in Heels," women are the fastest growing group of gun owners in the US; Hailey attends a concealed carry fashion show in Ohio to hear their stories and go shooting with grandma.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT, Viceland premiered "Communism, Cam Girls & Kidnapping," the Season 2 finale of STATES OF UNDRESS. Hailey travels to Romania, in the midst of the largest protests since the fall of communism, to find out what it's like to be the first generation of women raised in the EU.
