Plot Synopsis

SUNDERLAND 'TIL I DIE is a docuseries that chronicles the English soccer club Sunderland across multiple campaigns.

The eight-episode first season takes viewers through the 2017-18 season as the club tries to bounce back after relegation from the Premier League. Soccer is life in Sunderland, but relegation to England's second tier has left the club and its fans reeling. After a promising start to the season, the roster's lack of depth is exposed. With money short, the team scrambles for help in the transfer window. Frustration mounts among the players and fans as the team falls into the relegation zone, leaving manager Simon Grayson in a precarious position. A major shakeup brings renewed hope to the Stadium of Light, but as Christmas approaches, the team still seeks its first home win of the year. Netflix released the entire eight-episode series on Friday, December 13, 2018 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT.

SUNDERLAND 'TIL I DIE returned for its six-episode second season on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT on Netflix. Season 2 focuses on the 2018-19 season, as new owner Stewart Donald and Executive Director Charlie Methven attempt to save the club from financial ruin and haul the football club out of the third tier of the English leagues. Stewart's frustrations with agents mount during the club's contract negotiations with key players, including young goal-scoring leader Josh Maja. The team's run to a trophy final at Wembley Stadium brings pride and excitement to the long-suffering fans, who travel in huge numbers to London. A singular focus on promotion consumes the players, management and fans, who don't want to endure another season in League One.
