Plot Synopsis

Two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, journey into the dark world of the unexplained to find and destroy the demon that killed their mother. Traveling the country in their vintage Chevy Impala, the boys encounter creatures that most people believe only exist in folklore, superstition and nightmares. They make it their mission to rid the evil that preys upon the innocent. After dozens of bloody adventures, they finally closed in on their dark destiny: with the help of their friends, father-figure Bobby, and fallen angel Castiel, they managed to avert the Apocalypse. But the victory came at terrible cost: Sam sacrificed himself, to be imprisoned in Hell alongside Lucifer. A year later, a mysteriously resurrected Sam appeared at Dean's door, but Sam had returned from Hell without his soul, leaving him calculating and untrustworthy. In a risky move, Dean restored Sam's soul, but at great cost. Sam was flooded with horrific memories of Hell, memories that threatened to overtake him, even kill him. Castiel, determined not to lose the Civil War in heaven, made the reckless choice to open a door to Purgatory, a repository for all monster souls. Despite Sam and Dean's efforts to stop him, Castiel has succeeded in his plan of harness the power of those souls by absorbing them. His power is God-like, and Sam and Dean have no idea how to stop him. Now, Sam's violent memories of Hell threaten to overtake him, threatening not just his life, but his brother's as well. Meanwhile, Dean struggles under the weight of a secret that threatens to tear them apart. And even as the brothers traverse the backroads of America, hunting things that go bump in the night, something is coming for them. They are about to face an enemy more canny and adaptable than any they've ever fought. After killing Dick Roman at the end of Season 7 and banishing the Leviathan leader from Earth, Dean and Castiel were sent to Purgatory, where Cass soon vanished, leaving Dean surrounded by everything he has ever killed. Plus, Sam was left alone when Kevin the prophet and Crowley disappeared.

In Season 8, the boys faced their most important mission yet: close the gates of Hell once and for all. With the help of the prophet Kevin, Sam and Dean set forth to perform the Trials required to close the gates. While the boys worked to shut Crowley and his minions down for good, a new threat to his reign emerged: the Knight of Hell, Abaddon. Meanwhile, Cass, with the help of God's scribe Metatron, went on a mission to close the Gates of Heaven, but paid the ultimate price when the Scribe's nefarious intentions resulted in the angels of Heaven falling.

The ninth season of SUPERNATURAL debuted on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT on The CW. Season 9 opened with he fallout from the angels' descent to Earth. Sam and Dean were faced with a world inhabited by thousands of powerful beings who immediately began to form their own agendas, while the boys faced their most personal battle yet. Meanwhile, Castiel awakened to find himself more vulnerable than he's ever been. During Season 9, Crowley was pitted against the Knight of Hell, Abaddon, in a civil war for the throne of Hell, while the recently fallen angels formed battling factions, with the boys and Castiel caught in the crossfire of both conflicts. Meanwhile, the egomaniacal former scribe of God, Metatron, vied to replace the Almighty in the hearts and minds of angels and humans alike. However, absolute power corrupted the scribe, and the brothers were forced to confront the would-be deity, a conflict ending with the death of Dean Winchester. In the shocking final moments of the season, he would be resurrected by the power of the First Blade, opening his eyes to reveal he has been transformed into a demon.

Season 10 premiered on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT on The CW. The tenth season begins with Sam's frantic search for his missing brother, who is gone without a trace. The road to recovering the wayward Dean takes Sam down dark paths, with consequences that will shake the boys to their core. Meanwhile, Castiel has to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of Metatron's campaign. With his grace failing and rogue angels still on the loose, Cass faces the ticking clock of his own mortality. In Season 10, the all-powerful Mark of Cain threatened to consume Dean, turning him into one of the monsters he has spent his life hunting. Meanwhile, a formidable witch, Rowena, rose to power to claim her position at the right hand of the King of Hell, Crowley. Once Rowena revealed herself to be Crowley's mother, the King was forced to choose between his family and the Winchesters. All while Sam -- with the help of Castiel, Crowley, and some unlikely allies -- waged a desperate battle to save Dean from the Mark of Cain. Sam struck a dangerous deal with Rowena -- she would cast a spell to remove the Mark from Dean, but in exchange for the Book of the Damned. And removing the Mark releases The Darkness, an unstoppable evil force that was locked away by God. Rowena's spell works, and Dean is free from the Mark of Cain, but now The Darkness is free as well. And the Winchesters now must face the most powerful danger they have ever known, one that even God could not destroy.

In the 14th season, the Winchesters grappled with the Archangel Michael possessing Dean. In a valiant act, Sam and Dean's surrogate son Jack destroyed his soul to redeem his adoptive father. But this proved to be a fatal error, leading to the accidental death of Mary Winchester. Season 14 also featured the return of John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) for the show's historic 300th episode.
