Plot Synopsis

Charismatic highwayman Jan de Lichte leads the oppressed and downtrodden in a revolt against the corrupt aristocracy of 18th-century Flanders during the Austrian War. Jan returns from that war as a prisoner, accused of desertion and murder. He manages to escape and returns to his hometown, where he finds the sick and poor exiled to a nearby forest, while new bailiff Baru discovers Mayor Coffijn's corruption. Coffijn resists Baru's push for reform of the City Watch. Jan tells the Embo family that Emiel is dead, but hides his guilt. Debuting as THE GANG OF JAN DE LICHTE, the first two episodes of the series screened on Friday, October 12, 2008 on Serial Day of Film Fest Gent, and later had its world television premiere on Proximus. THIEVES OF THE WOOD had its U.S. premiere on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, as Netflix released all 10 episodes.
