Plot Synopsis

TRANSPARENT is a half-hour dramedy that follows the Pfeffermans, an LA family with serious boundary issues, who have their past and future unravel when a dramatic admission causes everyone's secrets to spill out. When Maura, who has spent her life as family patriarch Mort, reintroduces herself to her family, each family member spins in a different direction as they begin to figure out who they are -- and who they are going to become. Maura's ex-wife, Shelly, has since remarried, but the former couple still maintains a close relationship, often finding solace with each other. Maura and Shelly's three children -- meandering Ali, record producer Josh, and sexually conflicted Sarah -- are now all adults dealing with their own issues and reacting to Maura's revelation in very different ways. Sarah is married to Len, but her life begins to fall apart after she introduces him to her ex-girlfriend, Tammy. Josh is in a long-time relationship, reconsidering his vision of starting a family, and he's sent into a tailspin when he finally learns about Maura's secret. After Maura comes out to her, Ali looks for answers in a Gender Studies class, exploring her feminine side with the course's teaching assistant. Together, the family develops a new outlook on life, while reflecting on past decisions, their current situations, and their wide-open futures. More than seven months after releasing the pilot of TRANSPARENT on February 6, 2014, Amazon released nine more episodes on September 26, 2014, marking the show's official debut as a series.

On Friday, December 11, 2015 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Amazon premiered the second season of TRANSPARENT, releasing all 10 episodes of Season 2, which begins with a big, white wedding for Sarah and Tammy -- but is it happily ever after? Post nuptials, Sarah gets in touch with her deeper desires, which isn't always comfortable. Now out of the closet, Maura discovers the hardest part of her transition is still ahead, and faces some tough personal decisions about her future. Josh and Rabbi Raquel navigate their new relationship, and the complexity of being an instant family for Josh's recently returned son, Colton. Ali zeroes in on her future, captivated by a new connection with Syd and a prolific feminist mentor. Guest stars for Season 2 include Bradley Whitford, Melora Hardin, Michaela Watkins, Emily Robinson, Anjelica Huston, Cherry Jones, Kathryn Hahn, Rob Huebel, Carrie Brownstein, Alexandra Billings, Tig Notaro, Alex MacNicoll, and Trace Lysette.

The 10-episode third season of TRANSPARENT premiered on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT on Amazon Prime Video in the US, UK, Austria, Germany and Japan. In Season 3 the nuclear family splinters into disparate journeys on their continued path of self-discovery. After a jarring reality check, Maura, having found romantic partnership with Vicki and acceptance from her family, seeks to become the woman she envisions through gender confirmation surgery. Shelly relishes in her newfound love with Buzzy and finally discovers her voice -- she's going to tell her side of the story whether her family likes it or not. Meanwhile, Sarah and Ali embark on two different approaches to connecting to their spirituality. Sarah creates an East Side religious movement, but discovers that her own narcissism gets the best of her. Ali starts to have nitrous-induced visions, causing her to question her career path and her relationship with Leslie. And Josh, disengaged from work and love, suffers from a harrowing loss that forces him to reconcile with his past once and for all. All paths converge on a family cruise to Mexico, affirming that though their family history is murky, each Pfefferman is their truest self when they come together.

Season 4 of TRANSPARENT premiered on Friday, September 22, 2017, as Amazon released the entire 10-episode season at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT. In the season opener, "Standing Order," an exciting offer draws Maura to Tel Aviv. Hoping for a fresh start, Shelly sells her condo and shacks up with Josh. Grappling with their family's weird intimacy issues, Sarah, Ali, and Josh attend a sex and love addicts meeting together. Ali rents out the Pfefferman house and contends with weird AirBnBers. One month earlier -- on August 24 -- Amazon renewed TRANSPARENT for a fifth season.

On Friday, September 27, 2019 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Amazon Prime released TRANSPARENT's two-hour musical movie, which also serves as the series finale. When the Pfeffermans face a life-changing loss, they begin a journey hilarious and melancholy, brazen and bold. As they face this new transition, they confront grief and come together to celebrate connection, joy, and transformation.
