Plot Synopsis

Acquired from Sony Pictures Television, the historical drama series UNDERGROUND has a revitalized presentation as UNDERGROUND ON OWN, with newly filmed episodic introductions by cast members, never-before-seen behind the scenes footage and more. The premiere episode has been expanded to 90 minutes. UNDERGROUND tells the story of revolutionaries of the Underground Railroad who use their ingenuity, power and perseverance to attempt the greatest escape in history despite the dire consequences that awaited them on the other side. The provocative and compelling series focuses on a group of courageous men and women who band together for the fight of their lives -- for their families, their future and their freedom. Driven, perceptive and restless, Noah is known on the plantation for his dexterity as a blacksmith... and the telltale marks on his back that reveal a history of his dreams of freedom. Noah's young love interest, the shy Rosalee, has been sheltered away in the "big house" as a slave to the Macon family, and hasn't seen much beyond the edges of the plantation. She will soon discover another side to her that no one would have ever predicted...including herself.

UNDERGROUND ON OWN premiered on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 9-10:30pm ET/PT on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, immediately following by "Revisiting Underground," an all-new half-hour UNDERGROUND special at 10:30pm ET/PT. Grounded in this moment of cultural shift, "Revisiting Underground" reminds us of the importance of taking history off of the shelves and bringing it into our daily lives. Executive Producers John Legend, Misha Green and Joe Pokaski, along with the cast and crew, share personal stories, reflect on their time working on the show, and discuss the power of activism and the relevance of the show today. We'll look at the research everyone did to prepare for their roles, hear their personal stories of challenges and triumphs from their time working on these intense stories, and explore the music of the show. Finally, we'll share how the cast honors the heroes of the Underground with the activism in their daily lives.
