Plot Synopsis

Executive produced by Chuck Lorre, UNITED STATES OF AL is a half-hour comedy series about the friendship between Riley, a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (aka Al), the interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America.

The sophomore season of UNITED STATES OF AL premiered on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 8:30pm ET/PT on CBS. In the season opener, "Promises/Wadaha," Al, Riley, Art, Lizzie and Vanessa work together against a ticking clock to get Al's sister out of Afghanistan and to safety after Kabul falls. The story is inspired by the actual experiences of the Afghan and military veteran writers on the series who worked together to evacuate family members during the takeover of Afghanistan. After a four-week break, UNITED STATES OF AL returned with new episodes on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 8:30pm ET/PT on CBS. In the winter premiere, "Professor/Ustad," when Al invites his professor over for dinner, Al's professor and Lizzie start flirting with each other. Also, Riley hits a snag in his physical relationship with Holly and seeks out his therapist for help. John Ross Bowie returns as Professor Williams, Al's psychology instructor.
On Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 8:30pm ET/PT, CBS premiered "Chaos/Aashob," the series finale of UNITED STATES OF AL. Riley comes clean to Freddy about his relationship with Vanessa, and Cindy grows increasingly possessive of Al.
