Plot Synopsis

VACATION HOUSE RULES is a one-hour reality series that follows contractor and real estate expert Scott McGillivray, as he proves that homeowners don't need a million bucks to buy the vacation house of their dreams. Relying on his years of smart real estate and renovation experience, Scott teaches families how to take their vacation property purchase and unlock its full rental potential. With his guidance, even the most neglected and unlivable properties are transformed into unique, gorgeous -- and profitable -- vacation homes for visitors to enjoy. On Sunday, July 5, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT, HGTV debuted a 5-minute sneak peek of the series. Six days later -- on Saturday, July 11 at 8pm ET/PT -- HGTV aired the series' U.S. premiere. In the U.S. series opener, "Beach Retreat," Scott and his designer, Debra Salmoni, work to save a sinking lakefront cabin from going under. Battling floods and years of neglect, they transform the home into a beach-inspired retreat that's perfect for waterfront renting.

Season 2 of VACATION HOUSE RULES had its U.S. premiere on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 8pm ET/PT on HGTV. In the season opener, "Family Funhouse," a couple's waterfront vacation home has been empty for years. Wanting to generate some serious rental income, they bring in contractor Scott McGillivray and designer Debra Salmoni to turn their neglected property into a lake lover's dream.
VACATION HOUSE RULES returned for its fourth season on HGTV on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 9pm ET/PT. In the season premiere, "Smart Home Hideaway," after buying a neglected lakeside cabin, new homeowners quickly realize they're in over their heads. Scott McGillivray and Debra Salmoni utilize cutting-edge technology to bring their blast from the past into the new millennium, and to generate income.
