Plot Synopsis

While struggling to find social and professional happiness, Ryan is asked by his attractive next-door neighbor, Jenna, to watch her dog Wilbur, who looks like a regular canine to everyone else but appears as a man in a dog suit to Ryan. Since he's still psychologically recovering from his recent suicide attempt, Ryan sees Wilfred as his alter-ego, intent on pushing him out of his introverted shell and maybe even giving him enough confidence to get on Jenna's good side. As Ryan develops an unexpected relationship with Wilfred, who is best described as part Australian Shepherd and part Russell Crowe on a bender, he finds that their friendship allows him to address his feelings about happiness, trust and fear. But at the end of Season 1, Wilfred ends up in the hospital and doesn't recognize Ryan -- or at least he claims not to recognize Ryan. Worse yet for Ryan, when he goes home he discovers the basement where he and Wilfred shared laughter and tears is now just a closet. Season 2 opened with Ryan being released from a mental institution, and when he returns home, he breaks through the wall to find a boarded-up basement that he cleans up to hang out with Wilfred once again. During Season 2, Ryan had a girlfriend, Amanda, who was a biochemist at his new job, saw Wilfred the same way Ryan did, and later framed Ryan for selling out his company. In the Season 2 finale, Jenna and Drew got married, despite Wilfred's best efforts, and Wilfred shows Ryan one of his childhood drawings that includes a dog that looks a lot like Wilfred. Have Ryan and Wilfred been together his entire life? Season 3 premiered with back-to-back new episodes on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 10pm ET/PT on FX, and in the debut episodes, Ryan and Wilfred searched for Wilfred's original owner, while Ryan befriended Wilfred's enemy: the mailman. Moving to a new network, FXX, for its fourth and final season, Season 4 of WILFRED premiered on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT with back-to-back episodes. In the season opener, Ryan's world is in disarray, but he has yet another chance to make things right. Then, in the night's second episode, Ryan and Wilfred go on a camping trip, but an uninvited guest crashes their outing and turns it into a disaster. Gann co-created and played the title character in the Australian version of WILFRED.
