Plot Synopsis

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, AMERICAN BORN CHINESE is a one-hour coming-of-age adventure series that tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods. Jin is a regular American teenager whose hopes for "leveling up" his social life are derailed with the arrival of a new foreign student, Wei-Chen Sun. Dealing with high school politics, a racist viral meme from a '90s television show, and this eccentric new boy following him around, Jin fumbles his chance of getting on the soccer team and tarnishes his reputation. However, as Jin gets to know Wei-Chen, he discovers that this new kid is the son of the legendary Monkey King, Sun Wukong, from Chinese myth. As Wei-Chen enlists Jim in his search fro the rumored Fourth Scroll, Jin is faced with the trials and tribulations of heaven and high school, forcing him to find his own identity in the process -- and learning that his power comes from being himself. All eight episodes of AMERICAN BORN CHINESE dropped on Wednesday, May 24, 2024 on Disney+. ABC aired the linear television debut of AMERICAN BORN CHINESE on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 8pm ET/PT, showing the first episode as a sneak peek of the series.
