Plot Synopsis
THE AMERICAN FARM is a one-hour docuseries that presents an up-close look at one full year of family farming, as told through year on the ground at five different farms across America, while capturing private moments and personal interviews on these picturesque lands. This eight-part series is an honest tale of risk, reward, hard work, and innovation, centered on these farms of these families:
The Boyd Family: Beating the odds as an African-American Farmer, the Boyds of Virginia are an American success story. But now, after thirty-five years, the future of the family business is in doubt. Owner John Jr. needs one of his children to step up and take over the farm. Convincing the kids to do it, however, is another story.
The Griggs Family: This family operation is the model of what modern farming can be. Kelly leads the family with an open heart and no-nonsense approach, while Matt leads the farm with five generations of experience behind him and the latest technology in front of him. This is truly a team operation, with every member of the family pitching in, even the adorable nine-year-old, Carter.
The Meyers Family: Despite being isolated four hundred miles from the nearest road in the frozen Alaskan tundra, Tim Meyers and family are pulling off amazing feats of agriculture. Far from a mechanic shop or supply store, Tim is a 'DIY MacGyver' who has turned the freezing temperatures to his advantage, growing crops and running a booming business in the middle of nowhere.
The Robertson Family: The Robertson brothers, Si, Nate, and Bram, are the rambunctious, hard-headed brothers leading the family dairy farm into the future. Breeding and feeding a herd of over two hundred cattle, minding a corn field, and running a creamery, their sense of humor and passion come shining through every day.
The Sunderland Family: In the picturesque valley of Chester, Utah, the future of the Sunderland farm is more uncertain than ever. Run as a co-operation between Scott Sunderland and his son-in-law Brett Madsen, a down turkey market and a record-setting drought could mean the end for their operation. Caught in the middle of this struggle is Scott's youngest daughter, Jenna Madsen. With four kids to feed and a family business to protect, Jenna may be forced to step up and take matters into her own hands.
In the series opener, "Betting the Farm," as spring arrives, hard-working family farms across the United States gamble everything they have, fighting to stay in business, and stay together. The real-life struggle of men and women who put food on our tables begins each year by going deep in debt on new land, equipment and livestock.
