Plot Synopsis
BACK is a half-hour comedy series that centers on Stephen, as he tries to follow in his recently deceased father's footsteps and take over the family business -- but his plans are soon foiled by the unexpected return of his estranged foster brother, Andrew. Stephen's father Laurie, a local legend and pub owner, has died and Stephen is set to finally take over the family business. His mother, Ellen, and sister, Cass, have no interest in the pub. With his dad dead, it's now Stephen's chance to shine. His only achievements so far have been marriage (followed by divorce), a failed stint as a lawyer in London and a slightly disappointing pub refurb. But when the charming Andrew turns up out of the blue at Laurie's funeral, Stephen's plans go awry. Charismatic Andrew has lived in Sydney, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Berlin and Limoges but crucially, spent five formative months fostered by Laurie and Ellen as a 12-year-old. To Stephen, Andrew was just one of a string of 30-odd foster kids who he spent his childhood resenting. But Andrew remembers every single detail and sees that time as the most important of his life. Now Andrew's back, and anxious to revisit the closest thing he's ever had to a family. Ellen loves Andrew. Cass loves Andrew. Even Laurie's erratic brother Geoff loves Andrew...but Stephen doesn't love Andrew. He thinks he's a superficial, dangerous sociopath who's about to steal his family, his business and his life. BACK had its U.S. premiere on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, as SundanceNow debuted the entire six-episode first season.

Season 2 of BACK had its U.S. debut on Thursday, March 18, 2021 on SundanceNow, followed by its U.S. linear television debut two weeks later on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 11:59pm ET/PT on IFC. In Season 2, Stephen is back at his provincial pub, refreshed and re-energized, after a lengthy spell in the Lyneham Abbey Wellness Centre. Thankfully Andrew, the formerly prodigal foster brother, has been treading water keeping it going. But despite Stephen being back it's not all plain sailing. Stephen's sister Cass, resenting her mom's relationship with young boyfriend Julian, packs up and leaves home. Seemingly altruistic Andrew is focusing his troubling charm on the elderly parents of Stephen's ex-wife Alison. Blunt and uncompromising Uncle Geoff gets married and 're-greens' his farm. And the opening of a spectacular rival pub threatens the very future of The John Barleycorn.
