Plot Synopsis
Created, executive produced and written by Alec Berg and series star Bill Hader, BARRY is a half-hour dark comedy series that centers on Barry, a depressed, low-rent hitman from the Midwest. Barry's handler, Fuches, sends him to Los Angeles to execute a hit for the Chechen mob, led by Goran Pazar, and his right-hand man, NoHo Hank, a brutal but unfailingly polite sidekick. Barry's target: an aspiring actor who is having an affair with Pazar's wife. Barry follows his "mark" into an acting class taught by beloved teacher/guru Gene Cousineau, who takes Barry under his wing. Barry is instantly drawn to the group of students, especially Sally, a dedicated acting student. Barry wants to start a new life in the class, but the criminal world won't let him walk away so easily, especially when Fuches becomes alarmed to contemplate a future without his primary source of income.
The sophomore season of BARRY premiered on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 10pm ET/PT on HBO. Desperate to leave his violent past behind in favor of his newfound passion, Barry is attempting to untangle himself from the world of contract killing and fully immerse himself in acting. But getting out is messy. While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren't the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? As Season 2 opens, Barry struggles to focus exclusively on the theater and his girlfriend and classmate Sally, hoping against hope to rid himself of the ties that bind him to the Chechen mob group now led by Noho Hank, who ascended to the top job after Barry whacked his boss last season. Although he's persuaded grieving acting coach Gene Cousineau to return to class, Barry is incapable of extricating himself from a violent criminal triangle involving the Chechen, Bolivian and Burmese underworlds -- not to mention some deeply suspicious LA detectives. Meanwhile, on the Midwest horizon looms Monroe Fuches, Barry's erstwhile boss, who has found it exceedingly difficult to hire a replacement in Cleveland as capable as his onetime ace assassin. In the season opener, "The Show Must Go On, Probably?," Barry tries to convince Sally nd the rest of the class to go ahead with a performance, despite the absence of teacher Gene Cousineau, who's grief-stricken after the disappearance of Detective Moss. With Goran gone, Noho Hank and Cristobal's new partnership faces growing pains and jealousy issues. Back in Cleveland, Fuches learns that replacement hitmen don't come easy.
Season 3 of BARRY premieres Sunday, April 24, 2022 at 10pm ET/PT on HBO. Season 3 finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice. In the season opener, "Forgiving Jeff," an increasingly desperate Barry searches the dark web for jobs, while Sally, now the creator and star of her own show, begins to feel the pressures of success. Meanwhile, Noho Hank braves his first big test in interrogation, and Gene ruminates over Fuches' crushing reveal.
BARRY returned for its eight-episode fourth and final season with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, April 16, 2023 from 10-11pm ET/PT on HBO. Cousineau is hailed as a hero as Barry's arrest has shocking consequences. It's all been leading up to this -- the explosive and hilarious final chapter of Barry.
