Plot Synopsis
This one-hour reality series follows the men and women of the US Coast Guard's Columbia River Sector, who actively patrol some of the busiest waterways in the world, stretching from the Salmon and Snake Rivers in Idaho down the Columbia River to coastal Oregon and Washington. The area includes over 30 ports, 420 nautical miles of coastline and 500,000 square miles of ocean, and it also houses nine operational units including Air Station Astoria, Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment, Station Yaquina Bay, and Station Coos Bay. As the largest search and rescue station in the Northwest, Cape Disappointment sits at the mouth of the Columbia River. This area is regarded as one of the most difficult river bars to navigate in the world. With a combination of strong outgoing tides and large incoming swells, surf conditions can exist in and around the bar entrance producing waves that reach 30 feet in height, which is why the unit has five search and rescue boats all designed for operations in heavy surf conditions and are capable of re-righting themselves after being rolled over by breaking swells. COAST GUARD CAPE DISAPPOINTMENT chronicles the work of Coast Guard crewmembers like: Lt. Adriana Knies, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter pilot; Chief Petty Officer Joel Sayers, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer; Petty Officer 1st Class Nathan Burns, a boatswain's mate and surfman; Petty Officer 3rd Class Rashad Gipson, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crewman and aviation maintenance technician; and many more experts in rough-weather operations.
