Plot Synopsis
Since 1996, Do Something has honored the nation's best young world-changers, with pivotal "do-ers" in their field, cause, or issue being rewarded with a project grant, participation in a special award ceremony, media coverage, and continued support from Do Something. Initially known as the BR!CK Awards, these young adults were honored at relatively unpublicized star-studded dinners until 2007, when the event was first televised on The CW. The following year, the BR!CK Awards were renamed as the DO SOMETHING AWARDS and became the first non-celebrity category of the TEEN CHOICE AWARDS, with Scarlett Johansson presenting the $100,000 grand prize. In 2009, the event was held at the Apollo theater in New York, with a live audience of 1600, musical performances, and celebrity presenters like Usher, Nick Cannon, and Russell Simmons. One year later in 2010, the DO SOMETHING AWARDS found a new television home on VH1 as a live telecast, also now honoring celebrities who do great work and who inspire young people to do great work.

Hosted by Sophia Bush, the 2013 ceremony was televised live on VH1 from 8-10pm ET/5-7pm PT from The Avalon in Hollywood with performances by Sara Bareilles, J. Cole, Fitz & The Tantrums and more. Plus, the all-star lineup of presenters for 2013 included Malin Akerman, Lucy Hale, Cynthia Nixon, Russell Simmons, and Aisha Tyler. In addition to its celebrity honorees -- Patrick Dempsey, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jennifer Hudson, LL Cool J and Kelly Osbourne -- the 2013 DO SOMETHING AWARDS heralded the initiatives for the final five "Do-er" 2013 finalists eligible for the $100,000 prize: Sasha Fisher, who moved to East Africa to start Spark Microgrants; Daniel Maree, who started the Million Hoodies Movement for Justice to advocate for amending the Stand Your Ground law in Florida; Jillian Mourning, who started All We Want is LOVE (Liberation of Victims Everywhere) to educate the public about sex trafficking; Lorella Praeli, who founded Connecticut Students for a Dream, a local chapter of the national organization United We Dream; and Ben Simon, who created the Food Recovery Network at the University of Maryland, which uses college volunteers who recover leftover food from their dining halls and donate it to local soup kitchens and shelters. Plus, viewers were encouraged to post their #unselfishselfie (of them doing something good) on Twitter, and #VH1 donated $1 per pic to the @DoSomething finalists.
