Plot Synopsis
DOLL & EM is a half-hour, semi-improvised comedy that explores what happens when Em, a Hollywood actress, hires her childhood friend, Doll, as a personal assistant while making a film in Los Angeles. After a nasty breakup with her boyfriend in London, Doll joins Em in Los Angeles, agreeing to be her personal assistant during the production of a new film. At a pre-production Hollywood Hills party for Em's new movie, Doll gets stuck babysitting for Susan Sarandon's son, and later faces a rival when Buddy, a producer and the party's host, invites her into his hot tub. Once filming starts, Doll is cast as an extra, and she makes grieving look easy, while Em is flummoxed by her inability to summon tears during an emotional funeral scene. Between takes though, Doll befriends John Cusack and twists her foot on a coffee run, which forces Em to become Doll's personal assistant. To make matters worse, Doll interrupts a critical scene with Chloe Sevigny, as the director, Mike, is critiquing Em once again. After tasting success on set, Doll prepares to return to London for a screen test -- for a role that Em failed to land -- and even rejects an offer from Andy Garcia to become his personal assistant. Unfortunately, Doll doesn't get the role and is still working as a waitress in London, but she is in a local performance of "The Tempest," which Doll attends when she returns home for the holidays with her husband and kids. HBO aired the U.S. premiere of this six-episode series on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT, showing back-to-back episodes on three consecutive Wednesdays. HBO broadcast the U.S. premiere of Season 2 of DOLL & EM on Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 10:40-11:05pm ET/PT. Guest stars for the six-episode second season, filmed in New York late 2014, include Ewan McGregor, Olivia Wilde, Evan Rachel Wood and Mikhail Baryshnikov. In the new season, Doll and Em write an off-Broadway play together in an effort to do something creative on equal footing. They manage to hoodwink Evan Rachel Wood and Olivia Wilde into appearing in it -- with Wood playing Doll and Wilde playing Em -- but chaos ensues when Wilde and Wood begin to lose faith in the project.
