Plot Synopsis
GHOST ASYLUM follows the Tennessee Wraith Chasers (TWC), a team of paranormal Investigators and researchers, as they examine America's most frightening asylums, sanitariums and mental hospitals. Their goal isn't just to conjure spirits and collect evidence, but they are on a mission to physically capture restless souls with their cutting-edge ghost traps -- even if that requires using themselves as decoys. TWC was founded by Chris Smith, a native of Gallatin TN, who trained under Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango of SyFy's GHOST HUNTERS before returning home to start his own team, which includes: Doogie, the co-founder and backbone of TWC; Porter, the team's historian, who is also the handler for the group's canine, Bourbon; Brannon, the trap inventor, who has a background in theoretical physics; and Chasey, TWC's muscle, who is also the trap engineer. In this one-hour reality series, the crew travels across the United States to hunt down ghosts and apparitions in abandoned insane asylums, and in the series premiere they head to the Old War Memorial Hospital in Scottsville, Kentucky, where locals believe that a former doctor lost his mind and, after his death, his spirit returned to continue his rounds. In subsequent episodes, the teams explores buildings in Missouri, Oklahoma, Mississippi and North Carolina. On Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT, Destination America premiered the second season of GHOST ASYLUM, with eight new episodes airing in the spring and the second half of the 16-episode season scheduled for later in 2015. In the season opener, the team travels to Bethany, NY, where one of the Northeast's deadliest locations, Rolling Hills Asylum, is filled with sadness, tragedy and despair. More than 1,700 deaths have occurred on the property, which was once a haven for the mentally ill and physically impaired and became a hell home after the mistreatment of patients led to mysterious deaths. According to local legend, the spirit of a deformed giant roams the halls along with a torturous nurse who was notorious for terrifying the patients. Now, TWC ventures to Rolling Hills Asylum on a mission to catch these troubled souls.

A new 10-episode season of GHOST ASYLUM premiered on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT, immediately following an all-day marathon (9am-10pm) of encore episodes. In the season opener, "U.S.S. Edson," the TWC board the U.S.S. Edson, a haunted battleship that served in the Vietnam War. Their goal is to set free the spirits trapped aboard -- including a disturbed poltergeist. But the elusive entities seem to have other plans. Additional locations this season include Peoria Asylum in Bartonville, Ill.; Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City; Castillo de San Marcos, one of the country's oldest military forts, in St. Augustine, Fla.; and Old South Pittsburg Hospital in Tennessee. Plus, this season viewers have the opportunity to become a virtual extension of the TWC team through the GHOST ASYLUM-themed virtual reality experience. Grab a flashlight and join the ghost hunters on an investigation of the extremely haunted Preston Castle, a former boys' reform school in California. Watch the castle come to life with paranormal activity while searching for the spirit of a former ward named Nicholas and use ghost-hunting gadgets to make contact with the other side. The GHOST ASYLUM virtual reality experience is brought to life through Discovery VR, a cross-network digital offering that debuted in August 2015 which currently boasts a dynamic collection of more than 70 short-form videos. It is available on multiple platforms including: DiscoveryVR.com; through the Discovery VR iOS and Android apps; and across the Littlstar network (including Apple TV and the Samsung Gear VR). Viewers who don't have VR technology can still virtually take part in the ghost hunt! A 360-degree video of the experience will be available on DiscoveryVR.com as well as Destination America's Facebook page and YouTube channel. Use arrow keys to look left, right, up and down as you progress through the castle.
