Plot Synopsis

HOW I GOT HERE is a one-hour docuseries that follows young adults who accompany their immigrant parents back to their country of origin on a 10-day trip of a lifetime. Each episode tells the story of a parent-child duo's journey all while enjoying the picturesque views, local cuisine and cultural impact of locales ranging from Israel and Chile to Italy and Zambia. They each relive the sacrifice, struggle and dramatic circumstances that led their families up to this point and experience the confidence and connection that comes from tapping into their roots. HOW I GOT HERE debuted at 2:30pm ET/11:30am PT on Sunday, October 2, 2022 on BYUtv, moving to its regular timeslot -- Sundays at 6pm ET/3pm PT -- later the same day. In the day's first episode (2:30pm), "Zimbabwe: She Has Arrived," Fikile and her father, Bangane, travel to his homeland in Zimbabwe for the first time; Bangane teaches Fikile the rich history of their family, while she gains a deeper appreciation for their Ndebele culture. In the day's second episode (6pm), "Italy: Making Peace and Pizza," Michael and his father, John, travel to Italy together for the first time; despite their sometimes rocky relationship, the two work together to explore the culture that has shaped each of them and may help them reconnect for good.
