Plot Synopsis
Directed and produced by Andrew Jarecki and produced and shot by Marc Smerling, this six-part first season tracks the strange history of Robert Durst, scion of New York's billionaire real estate family, who has been accused of three murders over the past 30 years, but never convicted. Long suspected in the 1982 disappearance of his beautiful young wife in New York, the 2000 murder of the key witness in the case in Beverly Hills, and the subsequent murder and dismemberment of a neighbor in Galveston, TX, Durst has consistently maintained his innocence, and remains a free man today. THE JINX tracks Durst's history against the backdrop of unimaginable wealth and privilege, the filmmaker's seven-year investigation, and the extraordinary relationship that evolves between filmmaker and suspect, ultimately revealing secrets that have baffled authorities for years. While making the series, Jarecki unearthed thousands of pages of hidden documents, police files, key witnesses, never-before-seen footage and private prison recordings.

Debuting on Sunday, April 21, 2024 at 10pm ET/PT on HBO, THE JINX -- PART TWO is a new six-episode continuation of the THE JINX. Just hours before the last episode of Season 1 aired, Durst was arrested for the murder of his longtime friend Susan Berman in Los Angeles. Now, in Season 2, director and producer Andrew Jarecki chronicles the continued investigation over the next eight years as Durst awaited and sat trial, uncovering new information and following the prosecutor's case as it unfolded. The series brings to light material including interviews with Durst associates who had never before come forward, phone calls Durst made from jail to his friends, family, and lawyers, and video footage from the interrogation room where prosecutors interviewed him after his arrest. The series also features candid interviews with both prosecution and defense lawyers, as well as interviews with jurors and the trial judge. Featured participants are: Deputy District Attorneys of Los Angeles, John Lewin and Habib Balian; Durst's defense team led by Dick DeGuerin, who had helped Durst get acquitted in his 2003 Galveston murder trial, and celebrity lawyer David Chesnoff; journalists Charles Bagli, who has covered Durst for the New York Times, and Lisa DiPaulo who reported on Susan Berman's murder for New York Magazine; Judge Susan Criss, who presided over the Galveston murder trial; Judge Mark Windham, who presided over the Susan Berman murder trial; jury members; and friends and associates of Durst and of his victims Susan Berman and his first wife, Kathie Durst. Season 2 episodes include:
"Chapter 7: Why Are You Still Here?" (Sunday, April 21, 2024 at 10pm): As the first season of HBO's THE JINX is airing in early 2015, and incriminating evidence comes to light, Robert Durst -- scion of one of New York's most powerful real estate families -- goes on the run. He is captured in New Orleans and charged with the 2000 murder of his best friend, Susan Berman. With the help of his second wife, Debrah Charatan, Durst assembles a defense team, including the lawyer who helped get him acquitted in the 2003 murder trial of his neighbor in Galveston, Texas.
"Chapter 8: Friendships Die Hard" (Sunday, April 28, 2024 at 10pm): Durst contacts former friends and associates from jail, including Nick Chavin and Susie Giordano, friends who had helped Durst in the past. Nick initially tries to avoid getting involved in the case, but his wife Terry contacts the Los Angeles prosecutor to let them know her husband knows more than he is telling them, and Nick decides to cooperate.
"Chapter 9: Saving My Tears Until It's Official" (Sunday, May 5, 2024 at 10pm): Durst appears in court for the Susan Berman murder trial in Los Angeles in 2020. The court hears details of his first wife Kathie's disappearance in 1982, and the prosecutors make the case that Berman helped Durst cover up the crime. Bob's dear friend Nick Chavin takes the stand.
"Chapter 10: The Unluckiest Man In The World" (Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 10pm): Durst's longtime lawyer, confidant, and friend Stewart Altman is accused by prosecutor Lewin of being evasive on the stand, but his wife Emily becomes distraught and is more revealing. In an unusual step for a defendant in a murder case, Durst decides to take the stand.
"Chapter 11: Mostly the Truth" (Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 10pm): Following the trial closely, Kathie Durst's family hopes a conviction will bring closure -- as her body has never been found and Bob has never been held accountable for her murder. As he takes the stand, Bob tells his version of events, but prosecutor Lewin examines the story a bit more closely than Bob expected.
"Chapter 12: It Takes a Village" (Sunday, May 26, 2024 at 10pm): Found guilty of Susan's murder, Bob is sentenced to life -- but dies in jail a few months later. Seeking closure for the murder of his wife Kathie, her family files a suit against Bob's estate, now controlled by his second wife, Debrah. Bob's friends, including Debbie, and members of the Durst family are questioned on the record for the first time. Who will be held accountable?
