Plot Synopsis
Executive produced by Lorne Michaels and series star Kenan Thompson, KENAN is a half-hour family comedy series that centers on Kenan, a recently widowed host of Atlanta's #2 morning show, who struggles to balance his job and his young daughters despite all the "help" he gets from his grifter father-in-law, Rick; his brother/assistant/manager/house guest, Gary; and his co-workers. Kenan's daughters are his world -- the too smart Aubrey and the silly, unpredictable Birdie. He struggles to balance parenting them as a single dad and hosting his show, which leads him to reluctantly accept help from his father-in-law, Rick. Rick was a gallivanting sax player when his daughter, Cori, was young and missed out on a lot of her childhood, so he is aiming to make that up with his granddaughters, although his old-school parenting style does not often match up to Kenan's. At work, Kenan excels at his job with the help of his driven executive producer, Mika. Mika can be tightly wound, especially when Gary, as Kenan's not-so-managerial manager, tries to insert himself, but Mika remains a confidante and ally to Kenan. They are able to be vulnerable with one another and connect as friends and...maybe something more.
On Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at 8:30pm ET/PT, NBC premiered "Christmas," a special holiday episode of KENAN. As the team prepares for the annual Holiday Spectacular, Kenan is upset when Gary pursues a new client, Rick attempts to unseat Tami as the leader of the band and Mika feels her work is unappreciated.
KENAN's second season debuted with back-to-back new episodes on Monday, January 3, 2022 from 8-9pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "Dating App" (8pm), with Gary's help, Kenan signs up for a dating app that he might not be ready for while Rick has an interesting date of his own; Mika and Pam strategize to help Tami when she is caught in an unflattering situation by a tabloid photographer. Then, in the night's second episode, "Work Friends" (8:30pm), Kenan offends Tami when he reveals that he only sees her as a colleague and not as a friend; Gary and Rick encourage Birdie to use TikTok before she's ready, which lands her in real trouble at school.
