Plot Synopsis

Directed by Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi, THE KING WHO NEVER WAS is a three-part documentary that traces the story of Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia, the last heir to the throne of Italy. On August 18, 1978 at Cavallo Island, a one-day trip to the Mediterranean island takes a tragic turn when visitors get into an argument with Vittorio Emanuele. After the death of her 19-year-old brother, Dirk Hamer, Birgit seeks justice. When every attempt seems vain, a lawyer from Paris willing to help finally shows up. Years later, Vittorio Emanuele goes to trial. Birgit hopes that the truth will be finally unveiled, but unexpected witnesses show up for the Prince. THE KING WHO NEVER WAS also reveals an intimate tale emerges of Vittorio Emanuele: his troubled relationship with his parents, his love story with Marina Doria, his years working in Iran, his scandals and much more. All three episodes dropped on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 on Netflix.
