Plot Synopsis
A quarter-life crisis causes a young Chinese American woman, Nicky Shen, to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to San Francisco, she finds her hometown is overrun with crime and corruption and her own parents Jin and Mei-Li are at the mercy of a powerful Triad. Nicky relies on her tech-savvy sister Althea and Althea's fiance Dennis, pre-med brother Ryan, Assistant District Attorney and ex-boyfriend Evan, and new love interest Henry as well as her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice...all while searching for the ruthless assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor Pei-Ling and is now targeting her.
The sophomore season of KUNG FU premiered on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at 9pm ET/PT on The CW. Season 2 picks up six months after the Season 1 finale with Nicky and the rest of the Shen family in a great place: Nicky's been using her kung fu skills to keep Chinatown safe; she and Henry are only deeper in love with each other; the death of her shifu Pei-Ling has been avenged and her killer Zhilan is behind bars, and thanks to Jin and Mei-Li, the family's restaurant Harmony Dumplings is thriving. With the Shen family now in the know about Nicky's extracurricular crime-fighting, Nicky's finally comfortable and at peace in San Francisco...that is, until the reemergence of sinister billionaire Russell Tan (guest star Kee Chan), and the surprise appearance of Nicky's long-lost cousin, Mia (guest star Vanessa Yao). With the help of Henry, Althea, Ryan, Evan, and Dennis, Nicky will face off against the Tan family and become a shifu in her own right, as a new, action-packed myth unfolds in San Francisco's Chinatown.
Season 3 of KUNG FU premiered on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at 9pm ET/PT on The CW. In the season opener, "Shifu," the Shens prepare for Harmony Dumplings' grand reopening, and they learn that they have become the latest victims of a crime wave that has hit their Chinatown community. As Nicky and the team prepare to take matters into their own hands, a run-in with a vigilante named Bo (guest star Ben Levin) leaves Nicky wondering who this mysterious stranger in her city is. Elsewhere, following the legal fallout from her app, Althea and Dennis move back in with Mei-Li and Jin, and Ryan and Sebastian adjust to living together, while juggling their busy schedules. Finally, the unexpected arrival of someone from Nicky's past rocks her to her core. After a two-month break, KUNG FU returned with new episodes on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 9pm ET/PT on The CW. In the winter premiere, "The Architect," after a campaign ad targets the Shen family, Mei-Li takes matters into her own hands. Elsewhere, Delta Security's influence over the city becomes apparent after Ryan makes a shocking discovery at the hospital. Lou Diamond Phillips directed the episode.
