Plot Synopsis

THE MCCARTHYS is a multi-camera, half-hour sitcom that revolves around an Irish-Catholic, sports-crazed Boston family and the gay son, Ronny, whose greatest sin is not his sexuality but his desire to spend less time with his family. Arthur, the clan's patriarch and high-school basketball coach, is not always politically correct, and his wife, Marjorie, is a loving mother with no filter. Marjorie loves having Ronny keep her company when her husband and other kids are off coaching basketball games. Besides Ronny, the children are: Gerard, the one short guy in the family, who is mad about it; dim and chubby Sean, who lives in an attic room off of his brother Gerard's third-floor apartment; and daughter Jackie McCarthy, who is roommates with Ronny. When Ronny considers moving away, his father surprises everyone when he offers him a job as his assistant basketball coach. Touched by his father's offer, Ronny embarks on a completely different future. After a five-month break, THE MCCARTHYS returned with new episodes on Saturday, July 4, 2015 from 9-10pm ET/PT on CBS, as the network plans to air back-to-back new episodes for two weeks. In the first episode back (9pm), "Gerard's Engagement Party," the McCarthy family is reluctant to celebrate Gerard and Katrina's engagement, but when Gerard gets on the wrong Boston Harbor Cruise ship, Marjorie is forced to bond with her soon-to-be daughter-in-law. Meanwhile, Sean hits it off with Katrina's mother (guest star Jean Smart), and Arthur judges Jackie for how her baby was conceived. Then, in the night's second new episode (9:30pm), "Cutting the Cord," when the McCarthys realize they have become extremely dependent on one another, they make a family bet to see who can be independent the longest. Meanwhile, Jackie hides her pregnancy while on a date.

On Saturday, July 11, 2015 from 9-10pm ET/PT, CBS premiered the series finale of THE MCCARTHYS. In the night's first episode (9pm), "Family Therapy," the McCarthys find out that Ronny sees a therapist (guest star David Alan Grier), so they crash his appointment and have an impromptu family session where they air their grievances about each other. Then, in the finale (9:30pm), "End Games," the McCarthy children are sent into a frenzy when they each try to prove they are responsible enough to be appointed executor of their parents' will.
