Plot Synopsis

In this spinoff of BLACK-ISH, a young Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the '80s, and the dilemmas they face to acclimate in the suburbs while staying true to themselves. Bow's parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they're perceived as neither black nor white. This family's experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one's own identity when the rest of the world can't decide where you belong. On Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT, ABC debuted "When Doves Cry," the winter premiere of MIXED-ISH.In the wake of the Challenger tragedy, Rainbow and her family handle their grief in different ways. Denise realizes that life is too short, so she vows to right all the wrongs she's done in her life (and she's done a lot of bad).

Season 2 of MIXED-ISH premiered on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 9:30pm ET/PT on ABC. In the season opener, "Sweet Child O' Mine," after finding out Johan has been pretending to be a different race, Rainbow gets mad, and Alicia and Paul try to find a way to encourage Johan to be proud of being Black.

On Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 9:30pm ET/PT, ABC premiered "Forever Young," the series finale of MIXED-ISH. In 2021, Adult Rainbow, Johan and Santamonica recall very different accounts of what happened the summer that they all got their new bicycles. In the '80s, an overprotective Alicia's worst fear comes true when one of the kids goes off on their own with their bike and gets lost. Meanwhile, Harrison catches Denise spending extra time in the office to get overtime and puts her to work. Guest stars: Rashida Jones, Daveed Diggs and Anthony Anderson.
