MONSTERS: THE LYLE AND ERIK MENENDEZ STORY is the second series in the Ryan Murphy's "Monster" franchise, and this installment of the true-crime drama anthology probes the lives of the Menendez brothers, who were convicted of the brutal 1989 murders of their parents in Beverly Hills. On August 20, 1989, Jose and Kitty Menendez were brutally murdered in their Beverly Hills home. While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed -- and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole -- that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents. This series dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences' modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters? The series explores the complex dynamics within the Menendez family, and whether the brothers were troubled individuals acting out of fear and desperation due to years of abuse, or calculating killers driven by financial gain and greed.
