Plot Synopsis
Each year since 1984 -- except in 2005 when the season and awards ceremony were cancelled because of the 2004-05 lockout -- the National Hockey League (NHL) has announced finalists for each league trophy approximately one month before revealing the winners at a formal awards presentation, which is broadcast during primetime. Player awards include: Hart Memorial Trophy for the player judged to be the most valuable to his team, selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in all NHL cities; Vezina Trophy for the best goaltender, as voted by the general managers of all NHL clubs; James Norris Memorial Trophy for the defenseman who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position, as selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association; Calder Memorial Trophy for the rookie of the year, as selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season and each individual voter ranks their top five candidates on a 10-7-5-3-1 points system; Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for gentlemanly play and ability, as selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season and each individual voter ranks their top five candidates on a 10-7-5-3-1 points system; Frank J. Selke Trophy for the forward demonstrating the best defensive skill, as selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season; Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey, as selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season; and Ted Lindsay Award for the most oustanding player, as voted by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players' Association. In 2009, the awards ceremony moved from Toronto to Las Vegas, where it was broadcast live from the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel for three years, and then moved to Wynn Las Vegas' Encore Theater in 2012, United Center in Chicago for 2013, and then back to the Encore Theater in Vegas in 2014. For 2015, the event stayed in Vegas, moving to the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
