Plot Synopsis
Based on Patricia Highsmith's "Tom Ripley" novels, RIPLEY is an eight-episode limited series set in early 1960s New York, where Tom Ripley, a grifter just scraping by, is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. Tom's acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder. Characters in RIPLEY include: Dickie Greenleaf's girlfriend Marge, who suspects that darker motives underlie Tom's affability; Dickie, an entitled self-proclaimed artist, who spends his days in a villa on the Italian coast; snobbish playwright Freddie, who butts heads with Ripley when they first meet because he's distrustful of this new interloper in Dickie's circle; an Italian homicide detective, Inspector Ravini, who is dapper and dogged, but increasingly mystified by the murder investigation he finds himself leading; Signora Buffi, who is Tom's landlady in Rome; Reeves Minot, another American abroad -- and a mysterious figure who befriends Ripley; Herbert Greenleaf, Dickie's father, who hires Tom to travel to Italy and convince his son to return to the family business; Emily Greenleaf, who is Dickie's mother; Max Yoder, a wealthy close friend of Freddie; Italian shopkeeper Matteo; and more. All eight episodes, directed and written by Steven Zaillian, dropped on Thursday, April 4, 2024 on Netflix.
