Plot Synopsis

SACRED SITES is a one-hour documentary series that takes a new look at the world's most mysterious religious locations. Based on new scientific breakthroughs and compelling archaeological and historical research, the series includes episodes on: the ancient cities of Petra and Hegra; the secrets of the Knights of the Templar; the oracles of Ancient Greece; the magnificent tombs and temples of ancient Egypt; and the ruined great houses of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. Each program explores fundamental questions about these sites and the people who constructed them, while providing insight into the people of these ancient cities, their practices and struggles, and how this is all reflected in their shrines and temples. Season 2 of SACRED SITES premiered on Monday, August 13, 2018 at 8pm ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel. Nw episodes will bring viewers to sanctified and historical locations stretching from Europe to North Africa, through the Mayan civilization in the Americas, across the path of the Camino de Santiago and more. The Season 2 opener, "King Arthur," studies the myth of one of the most famous and legendary monarchs of all time. Legend says that King Arthur will return again one day to rule Britain, though many experts believe he was simply a mythical figure. Yet, in the last few years, new evidence from ancient sites across Britain suggests that this powerful legend is rooted in fact. This episode seeks to answer the question: was this storied King a legend, or real?

On Monday, September 17, 2018 at 8pm ET/PT, Smithsonian Channel premiered the Season 2 finale of SACRED SITES. In the season ender, "Nazi Myths," in the 1930s, Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler were convinced Aryans from the mythological land of Atlantis really existed and founded great civilizations across the world. To prove their theory, a special SS division called the Ahnenerbe was formed to carry out archaeological investigations at ancient sites.
