Plot Synopsis
Directed by Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott, SPECTOR is a four-part documentary series that examines how the destinies of Phil Spector and Lana Clarkson became intertwined with the report of a fatal shooting of a woman at the eccentric French chateau style mansion in Los Angeles owned by the legendary music producer. The victim was Lana Clarkson, a charismatic and once prolific film actress whom he had met just that night. Through the lens of this notorious crime and the infamous trial which followed, this four-part documentary series peels back the layers of what actually happened that night to tell the stories of both Clarkson and the man who was convicted of her murder. In doing so, SPECTOR re-examines the life and career of an important yet enigmatic cultural figure of the 20th century -- a man responsible for countless hit records, including "Be My Baby," "Da Do Run Run" and "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" -- and a bygone era of Hollywood and the music industry. All four episodes of the docuseries release on demand and on streaming platforms for Showtime subscribers on Friday, November 4, ahead of its on-air premiere on Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 9pm ET/PT on Showtime:
"To Know Him Was to Love Him" (Sunday, November 6, 2022 on Showtime): A frantic 911 call reporting the shooting of a woman brings police to an LA mansion belonging to eccentric, legendary music producer Phil Spector. The woman is actress Lana Clarkson, and Spector claims she committed suicide. Detectives investigate Clarkson's rocky relationship with Hollywood looking for a suicide motive, but Spector's long-running reputation for volatility throws suspicion on him.
"California Dreams" (Sunday, November 13, 2022 on Showtime): As Phil Spector's success grew, so did his paranoia. He became increasingly erratic, controlling and volatile, hindering his career. Meanwhile, Lana Clarkson's star rose. After making a startling discovery in Spector's castle, detectives become convinced Clarkson's death was a homicide.
"A House of Blues" (Sunday, November 20, 2022 on Showtime): Lana Clarkson struggled to secure new roles as she entered her 40s. Concurrently, Phil Spector returned to the Hollywood spotlight. The two stars collided at the House of Blues where Clarkson took a job as a hostess, and the night ended in her tragic death. Spector faces trial for murder and professes his innocence to the public, making it difficult to find unbiased jurors. The prosecution presents witnesses who testify to Spector's violent behavior while the defense relies on the lack of physical evidence.
"How Will You Remember Me?" (Sunday, November 27, 2022 on Showtime): Lana Clarkson's murder case ends in a mistrial when the jury can't reach a unanimous decision, devastating her family. However, a second trial with a new jury ends in Spector's conviction and the iconic music producer would himself die behind bars. In the wake of his death, those left behind question Phil Spector's legacy.
