Plot Synopsis

Season 1: When a pregnant 12-year-old girl named Tui disappears after last being seen standing chest deep in a New Zealand frozen lake, investigative detective Robin Griffin searches for the missing girl. To find Tui, Griffin decides to lose herself, but she collides with G.J., a guru at a local women's camp, and Matt Mitcham, Tui's drug-lord father. TOP OF THE LAKE was written and directed by Jane Campion, who is working with actress Holly Hunter for the first time since they each won an Oscar for their work on THE PIANO in 1993. TOP OF THE LAKE had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2013 as a six-hour event and was then presented at the Berlin Film Festival the following month, before making its television premiere on Sundance Channel as a seven-part limited series.

The second season, TOP OF THE LAKE: CHINA GIRL, premiered on Sundance TV as part of a three-night special event, beginning Sunday, September 10, 2017 and continuing Monday, September 11 and Tuesday, September 12 at 9pm ET/PT each evening. Detective Robin Griffin recently returned to Sydney and tried to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realizes 'China Girl' didn't die alone. Robin looks to the investigation to restore herself, but her problems are personal. Haunted by a daughter given up at birth, Robin desperately wants to find her, yet dreads revealing the truth of her conception. But her search to learn the identity of 'China Girl' will take her into the city's darkest recesses and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart.

On Tuesday, September 12, 2017 from 9-11:40pm ET/PT, Sundance TV premiered the finale of TOP OF THE LAKE: CHINA GIRL. In the 160-minute finale, Robin and Pyke's fears for Mary escalate, and Miranda drops a bombshell that brings her closer to the dead girl, putting her on the wrong side of the law.
