Plot Synopsis
From the illegal weapons to the underground sex trade, nothing is off limits and everything is for sale in illegal, underground markets. It's an industry that is brutal, exploitative, and corrupt. Despite efforts to crack down on these illegal trades, more than $625 billion makes it's way into the US economy each year for illegal trade goods. UNDERWORLD, INC. gains unprecedented inside access, bringing light to the inner workings of black markets, where workers, suppliers, sellers, customers -- and the law enforcement trying to keep it in check -- share their experience of a hidden world that touches us all. Each one-hour episode of this series focuses on a different underground world, including: ghost guns, which are replica guns having fake serial numbers and no ballistic records, making them potentially invisible to law enforcement; the illegal, multibillion-dollar global sex trade that includes brothels, massage parlors and online escort agencies; human smugglers, often linked to Mexican cartels, who dominate an extremely lucrative industry exporting thousands of undocumented migrants from Central America to the US border; and other black markets like illegal gambling, knock offs and fake pharmaceuticals.

On Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT, Nat Geo premiered the second season of UNDERWORLD, INC. The season opener, "Moonshine Mayhem," reveals how black market moonshine is big business -- high-proof, low-cost, untaxed and illegal. But the law is cracking down and urban bootleggers are bringing fresh competition. It's the first day of the whiskey-making season for one expert moonshiner. For six months a year, Rosco works a job in the nearby coal mines and for the other six months, he makes his living outside the law -- making moonshine. Rosco needs two key elements for a successful and lucrative operation -- secrecy and water. He's found the perfect hidden site deep in the traditional heart of moonshine production: the southern Appalachian Mountains. But 700 miles southwest, in Holmes County, Mississippi, there's a special police unit cracking down on 'shiners like Rosco. These police special agents, from the state's alcoholic beverage control, specialize in enforcing liquor laws and catching moonshiners. Subsequent episodes in Season 2 focus on car jackers, the organ trade, and much more.
