Plot Synopsis

Based on Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's 2014 movie of the same name, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS in a half-hour comedy series that follows four vampires who have been roommates for hundreds and hundreds of years, while living in modern day Staten Island. The self-appointed leader of the group is Nandor The Relentless, a great warrior and conqueror from the Ottoman Empire, who has taken the helm of the group despite many of his Old World tactics resulting in what some might politely refer to as bupkis. Then there's the British vampire Laszlo -- a bit of a rogue and a dandy and a fop, he might say. He's a lover of mischief and a great soiree, but not as much as he loves seeing Nandor fail miserably in every attempt. And then there's Nadja: the seductress, the temptress, the vampiric Bonnie to Laszlo's Clyde. Her wisdom and provocative tales from times past allow us insight into the many ups and downs of living an immortal life. Also cohabiting in the vampire household is Guillermo, Nandor's familiar (a.k.a. servant/protector during the daylight hours), who wants nothing more than to be made a real vampire just like his master. Also lurking about is Colin Robinson, an energy vampire and day-walker of sorts -- he feasts on humans, but not on their blood. A frequent visitor is Nadja's new friend, Jenna, a student at a nearby community college. She loves LARPing, boys, and art history, and for some reason has been rather confused lately as to why it is she so ravenously craves the flesh of the living. After an unexpected visit from their dark lord and leader, Baron Afanas, the vampires are reminded of what they were initially tasked with upon their arrival in Staten Island over a hundred years ago -- total and complete domination of the New World. But what exactly is the best way to go about achieving said domination?

Season 2 of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS premiered on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 from 10-11pm ET/PT on FX with back-to-back new episodes. In the season opener, "Resurrection" (10pm), Nadja and Laszlo's new familiar poses problems for an increasingly anxious Guillermo, and the vampires enlist the services of a local necromancer. Then, in the night's second episode, "Ghosts," the vampires hold a seance to deal with a ghost infestation, which leads to a larger ghost infestation.

After the shocking Season 2 finale, the housemates are in a panic about what to do with Guillermo after discovering that he is a vampire killer. In Season 3, the vampires are elevated to a new level of power and will encounter the vampire from which all vampires have descended, a tempting Siren, gargoyles, werewolf kickball, Atlantic City casinos, wellness cults, ex-girlfriends, gyms and supernatural curiosities galore. Plus, Colin Robinson is turning 100. And Nandor, faced with his own eternal-life crisis, tries to inject his life with more meaning. Will he find love or is he destined to be an immortal bachelor with 37 ex-wives? Season 3 of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS premiered on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at 10pm, as FX debuted back-to-back new episodes.

Season 4 of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS debuted on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 from 10-11pm ET/PT on FX, with back-to-back new episodes. The new season continues to make the case for blood and comedy with more strange beasts, surprising guest stars and tap dancing than ever. And this time with just a touch of home renovation. In the season opener, "Reunited" (10pm), the vampires return from their world travels to find their mansion on the verge of collapse, and a freakish new creature in the house. Then, in the second episode, "The Lamp" (10:30pm), Nandor's search for love is finally successful, and Nadja realizes her lifelong ambition of opening a vampire nightclub.

The fifth season of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS premiered with two new episodes on Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 10-11:10pm ET/PT on FX. Season 5 continues to follow the nightly exploits of vampire roommates Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin Robinson as they navigate the modern world of Staten Island with the help of their human familiar, Guillermo, and their vampire bureaucrat acquaintance, The Guide.

The sixth and final season of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS debuted with three new episodes on Monday, October 21, 2024 from 10-11:45pm ET/PT on FX. A new installment premieres weekly on Mondays at 10pm through December 16. After a very brief stint as a full-blown vampire, Guillermo is re-evaluating his life. Who is he if not a familiar who will do anything to please his Master in hopes of one day being turned into a vampire? Meanwhile, the vampires are re-evaluating, too. When their former roommate reappears after a 50-year nap, they realize how little they've done in half a century -- not one goal accomplished, not one dream pursued, not one part of the New World conquered (except for their street and part of Ashley Street). In Season 6, Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo, Colin and Guillermo will enter the workforce, visit New Hampshire, go to a human dinner party, fete The Baron, and conjure a demon -- all while trying to find their place and their purpose in this crazy, mixed-up world. The first three episodes debuting October 21 are:

"The Return of Jerry" (10pm): The vampires' long-lost fifth roommate, Jerry (guest star Michael Patrick O'Brien), returns. Written by Paul Simms; directed by Kyle Newacheck.

"Headhunting" (10:35pm): Guillermo gets a new job, and Colin helps Laszlo make a new friend. Written by Jake Bender & Zach Dunn & Sam Johnson & Sarah Naftalis; directed by Kyle Newacheck.

"Sleep Hypnosis" (11:10pm): A dispute over who gets to use the newly available empty room under the stairs gets out of control. Written by Marika Sawyer; directed by Yana Gorskaya.
