The Other Walk of Fame
Mike Vicic - February 23, 2009
When somebody asks you, "Do you want to check out the Walk of Fame?" What's your first thought? Hollywood?
That's what I expected, but I ended up in Studio City instead.
Yes, there is a Walk of Fame in Studio City — has been since the Summer of 2003 — but it sure is a well-kept secret.
Back on July 3, 2003 the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission approved a plan to install approximately 300 granite tiles along Ventura Boulevard between Rhodes Avenue and Carpenter Avenue, across from the CBS Studio Center. The first placard was placed in the sidewalk about a month later.
These tiles honor films and television shows that were made exclusively in Studio City over the last 75 years, including the following TV series:
- Republic Studios in the 1950's (Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe, Cimarron City, General Electric Theater);
- CBS Studios in the 1960's and 1970's (Gunsmoke, Big Valley, Gilligan's Island, Get Smart, My Three Sons, The Bob Newhart Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show);
- CBS/MTM Studios in the 1980's (Roseanne, A Different World, thirtysomething, St. Elsewhere, Newhart, Hill Street Blues, Falcon Crest);
- CBS Studio Center in the 1990's (Seinfeld, Grace Under Fire, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Cybill, Caroline in the City);
- CBS Studio Center in the 2000's (CSI:NY, Will & Grace, Malcolm in the Middle, Bernie Mac, According to Jim, Big Brother, That 70's Show).
This list of shows is definitely not comprehensive. To see a list of all films and TV series, you should check out the online Walk of Fame Placard Locator.
