Plot Synopsis

Thriller novelist Marcus Sakey travels across the United States to discover how historical crimes and criminals helped shape America's cities. In each 60-minute episode, Sakey visits one city to investigate three different crimes, by meeting with law enforcement, historians, coroners, detectives, psychologists and anybody else who can show him the sites, sounds and experiences of a crime. In his hometown, Chicago, Sakey learns about America's first serial killer, H.H. Holmes, relives the bloody riots of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and tracks down the real story behind Public Enemy Number, John Dillinger. To learn about the 1968 DNC riots, Sakey meets with a retired officer at Manny's Deli, explores Grant Park, and is sprayed with mace to experience what the rioters endured. In Boston, Sakey learns how to pull off a robbery like Great Brinks Robbery, goes undercover to see how mob boss Whitey Bulger eluded the FBI, and takes a psychopath test to get inside the head of the Boston Strangler. Other cities highlighted in Season 1 of the series include Anchorage, Atlanta, Austin, the Florida Keys, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
